For strengthening its profile in ICT at international level, the University of Oulu announces the following Associate Professor (tenure track) or Professor position:

Associate Professor (tenure track) OR Professor Position in System on Chip (SoC) Technologies for Wireless Systems

The position is directed to investigate the design of SoC technologies with an emphasis on wireless applications of SoCs to enable data rates toward 1 Tbits/s rates for 6G in one or more of the following areas:

  • Software (SW) and hardware (HW) implementations in heterogenous signal processing systems such as digital signal processors (DSPs), application-specific instruction set processors (ASIPs), hardware acceleration, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) etc.
  • Embedded system design and integration
  • System and algorithm modelling including fixed point models
  • Machine learning (ML) algorithm implementations by SoCs
  • SoC design methodologies and tools, use of ML in the design

The positions are open to highly talented researchers who hold a doctoral degree, and master one or more of the above-mentioned research topics. Furthermore she/he should be able to raise funding to build her/his research group within a few years supplementing the research portfolio of the faculty, research unit and 6G Science Flagship. The top candidates undergo an evaluation by external experts and are required to reach top scores in order to be recruited.

The 5-year position will start from January 1, 2022, or later upon to a mutual agreement with the successful applicant. The successful researchers appointed to a tenure track position may advance in their career through the tenure track process. A trial period of six months is applied to both positions.

The position is placed in the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE, http://www.oulu.fi/itee ). The position can be placed in one of the following Research Units of ITEE depending on the elected candidate profiles: Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) (https://www.oulu.fi/cmvs/ ), Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC)– Radio Technologies (RT), (https://www.oulu.fi/eeng/node/7562 ), or Circuits and Systems (CAS). The position is initially funded by a donation of industry and the City of Oulu.

The selection procedure will be carried out by an Appointment Committee according to the University of Oulu guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates are subjected to publication analyses  based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation.

Associate Professor:

Our tenure track is positioned for exceptionally talented researchers with a high potential to advance in their careers. The top candidates will undergo an evaluation by external, international experts and are required to reach top scores (5-6 on a scale from 1 to 6 for scientific activity and as the overall score) in order to qualify for the position.

Career advancement in the tenure track system is based on assessments of the candidate’s performance and merits. We expect you to have an applicable doctoral degree as well as evidence of scientific research work and the teaching skills required in the position. You must have the ability to lead a research group and acquire supplementary research funding. We also expect you to have sufficient and relevant experience in international scientific work and evidence of international cooperation.

Professor:

As a Professor, you are required to have a doctoral degree, high-quality scientific qualifications and experience of leading scientific research. You have the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise thesis work. You should also show evidence of international cooperation in the field. In addition to this, you should have the skills to act as an academic leader.

The selection process follows the University of Oulu recruitment guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation, assessing the following merits:

  • Scientific activities and their reflection in the publication record, scientific presentations and other recognitions, e.g. awards and patents
  • Teaching activities and their evaluation (teaching portfolio; including student’s evaluation)
  • Supervision of diploma and doctoral students
  • Acquisition of competitive research funds
  • International scientific activities and contacts
  • Services for the academic community
  • Academic and societal relevance and potential of activities

  • The salary for associate professor will be based on the levels 6-7 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The EUR salary will be approximately €4300-6000 per month. Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.
  • The salary for professor will be based on the levels 8-9 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The EUR salary will be approximately 5800-7500 per month. Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.

Other benefits: The successful candidate will receive full benefits provided by the University of Oulu to university employees, including free time corresponding to holidays. The successful candidate will receive also benefits provided by the Finnish government to residents, for example possibility to obtain access to the national healthcare system, tax benefits for employees with children and high-quality affordable childcare services.
