Water Environmental Engineering Research Group at Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Built Environment invites applications for:

ACADEMIC COORDINATOR to support the EDUCase Platform related academic activities at Aalto University.

EDUCase Platform is a Ministry of Education and Culture Global Programme pilot (2021-2024) coordinated by Global Engagement team at Aalto University. It aims to build a platform for collaborative teaching activities between Finnish higher education institutions (HEIs) and academic institutions in partner countries in the Global South (Africa / Asia). The joint education actions aim to: 

1)     enhance teaching activities related to sustainable development challenges both in Finnish HEIs and partner institutions 

2)     Contribute to national and institutional educational development priorities set by the global partners 

3)     strengthen networks between partner countries’ higher education institutions and local innovation ecosystems 

4)     enhance practical collaboration and deepen research networks and global competence of Finnish higher education institutions 

Education projects advanced by the network may adapt variations of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approaches to enable equal peer-to-peer case work between Finnish and partner country students as well as peer teaching and mentoring between faculty. The case work will reflect locally relevant sustainability topics and involve local and/or Finnish companies, communities and organizations, contributing to active building of local innovation ecosystems. Activities may include, for example, student projects between two or more universities, joint fieldwork, intensive courses, joint mentoring, research projects or student and teacher exchanges. 

Aalto University is responsible for coordinating the operations and planning the structure of the cooperation. All the HEIs participating in the network are involved in the development of the operations and its content.  

An ACADEMIC COORDINATOR for the EDUCase Platform at Aalto University would contribute to building a network of competent academics from EDUCase Platform HEIs in the thematic area of sustainable development and global responsibility through

  • organizing “training of trainers” for the university teachers to share PBL pedagogy in multicultural and interdisciplinary contexts
  • developing student-centered teaching methods for problem-based education with EDUCase Platform HEIs and partners
  • making the best practices available for a larger number of academics both nationally and internationally and ensuring their scalability.
  • promoting collaboration between courses, research projects, Master’s programmes and research groups at Aalto and HEIs in the EDUCase Platform
  • coordinating and participating in the multilateral practical educational activities, for example
    • joint intensive master’s level courses, including fieldwork
    • shared mentoring and new educational proposals arising from the EDUCase Platform.
    • connecting the teaching and research activities to the innovation ecosystems at Aalto University, Finnish and local partners and societies
    • contributing to strategic planning, funding proposals and applications

The position is for a fixed term until 31.12.2024.

The ACADEMIC COORDINATOR is expected to have

  • pedagogical studies, with competence in interdisciplinary and intercultural higher education
  • familiarity with global sustainable development and higher education agendas 
  • at least 5 years’ experience in coordinating and teaching in interdisciplinary courses and programmes related to sustainable development and global responsibility in multicultural contexts.
  • ability to lead interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams and working groups and encourage collaboration across academic, institutional and cultural borders 
  • excellent English language skills, presentation skills and ability to produce teaching materials and other published materials 
  • analytical skills and ability to contribute to strategic planning 
  • an independent, flexible and active style of working 
  • a commitment to diversity, creating equal and empowering work environments and responsible management
  • master’s degree in a relevant field (doctoral degree is considered as an advantage)

Contract terms: The monthly salary for the position follows the university salary system.
