Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 30 Aug 2022

Research
In this position, you expand the scope of PSI-EAVISE towards hard real-time computer vision, with particular attention to the area of sensing for intelligent vehicles. Within the research group EAVISE at campus De Nayer, which specializes in industrial applications of state-of-the-art image processing techniques, we see an increasing demand from industry for hard real-time solutions. In many industrial applications such as inspection and production, maximum cycle times must be effectively guaranteed. Also in safety-critical applications such as visual systems that guarantee the safety of people, a guaranteed reaction speed is of prime importance. Intelligent vehicles offer an obvious application domain of hard real-time sensing, where it must be ensured that the interpretation of sensor signals must be available within a predefined time, without sacrificing accuracy. This is the case for a broad range of solutions, from driver assistance systems for passenger cars to fully self-driving cars, but certainly also for autonomous robots and drones, vessels and other transportation systems. In terms of functional performance, the state-of-the-art image processing algorithms are certainly able to handle many industrial questions, but the missing link is often the translation of these complex algorithms into a hard real-time framework on specific embedded hardware with limited resources (microcontroller, ASIC, FPGA, embedded GPU). This will require research that is more closely related to hardware than is currently being done within EAVISE.The research will be conducted in consultation with the research group ECS, which builds hardware for image processing and AI algorithms, and with the campus research focus on smart mobility. This profile vacancy includes the complementary specialization to adapt complex algorithms so that they are suitable to run on real-time hardware. You develop an international level research program in hard real-time embedded vision, applied in particular to sensing for intelligent vehicles. You strengthen existing lines of research and bring in complementary expertise. You will engage in targeted scientific research activities that result in doctorates and publications that meet international standards and that lead to broad international recognition. You support or initiate a network of companies by valorising research results and providing industrial services, with the aim of strengthening industrial innovation. You will develop an international partnership around your research program, both within the academic world and with industrial partners. You are able to acquire both competitively project-based government funding and bilateral industrial funding. You give ...
