Professor and Director of Bristol Trial Centre

Updated: about 2 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 10 Dec 2021

Based in our Faculty of Health Sciences, Bristol Trials Centre (BTC) is home to two UKCRC-registered Clinical Trial Unit hubs; one located in the University of Bristol campus and the other in Bristol Royal Infirmary in the city centre. We are in the process of obtaining joint registration and are planning to co-locate the Centre on a single site in the near future. The Centre was formally launched in November 2019 following the merger of the Bristol Randomised Trials Collaboration and the Clinical Trials and Evaluation Unit.

At this important time, we are now looking for a leading trialist (clinical or non-clinical) who can provide inspirational leadership in population and clinical trials across Bristol Medical School and NHS partners. You will join the senior team of Bristol Trials Centre, directing the Centre which has strong links with a large number of NHS organisations including University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, North Bristol NHS Trust and primary care, as well as other partner organisations covering public health, community-based services and the third sector. You will also play a critical role in leading and developing a team of over 50 researchers whilst engaging at a national and international level in research and strategy, acting as the main link with our core funders particularly NIHR. This is a key post for us and will work alongside the University’s Specialist Research Institute Directors and interdisciplinary University Research Institutes to deliver cutting edge research that has a major impact on population health, the NHS and patient care in primary and secondary care settings. We are particularly keen to develop research that cuts across traditional clinical and methodological boundaries.

We offer a wide range of expertise in trials methodology, study design, study management, statistical analyses and data management, including bespoke database design. We work with clinicians and researchers from across the UK, starting with the research idea through to the grant application and delivery of the research, and also have experts in health economics and social science.

This is a fantastic and unique leadership opportunity in the sector, and one that will importantly contribute to the ongoing evolution of the research strategy of the Medical School. You will be critical in leading the development of an internationally renowned research programme in clinical trials, working collaboratively both across the university and externally, with key funders including NIHR, UKRI, BHF, UKCRC, and the Wellcome Trust. This is a significant and institutionally-spanning strategic leadership role, contributing to strategy of the Centre, the Faculty and University.

If you have a proven portfolio of world-class research in trials and an established and sustainable record of research output in international journals, in addition to an in-depth knowledge of the current status of research in trials and an ability to work across traditional disciplinary boundaries, establishing links with cross institutional partners, we would be delighted to hear from you.
