The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki and the research consortium FLUX invite applications for up to

THREE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS OR UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS

to work with Dr. Christina Bohk-Ewald and Professor Mikko Myrskylä in the research project FLUX: Family Formation in Flux – Causes, Consequences, and Possible Futures. The positions are for 3-5 years, based at the University of Helsinki, with a flexible starting date in 2022, and ample opportunities for professional growth. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD by the time they start and the level of remuneration is aligned with the years of relevant research experience after obtaining the PhD.

The project FLUX focuses on the causes and consequences of the unprecedented changes in fertility and family formation in the Nordic countries and Finland. Comparative, cross-national research beyond the Nordic countries is also welcome. The FLUX team is a collaboration that includes leading researchers from relevant disciplines, such as demography, sociology, economics, and social data science, in Finland, the Nordic countries, and beyond. The FLUX project is led by Dr. Marika Jalovaara (University of Turku) and Prof. Mikko Myrskylä (University of Helsinki and Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research) and has strong ties to international research institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany as well as to social policy and governmental research organizations in Finland. With this job ad, we are recruiting to the University of Helsinki based research arm of the FLUX project. This arm is directed by Dr. Christina Bohk-Ewald and Prof. Mikko Myrskylä. We are particularly interested in scientists who can contribute to one or more of the following research aims of the FLUX project:

  • Micro-level dynamic interrelationships between family formation, timing of fertility, human capital accumulation, and labor force participation;
  • Projecting and forecasting demographic patterns, in particular fertility, and socio-economic processes related to fertility;
  • Consequences of changing family formation patterns on the well-being of children.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    The candidates are expected to have:

    • a PhD in demography, economics, data science, statistics, sociology, or a related field (or expected to acquire such a degree by the time of starting in FLUX);
    • strong skills in quantitative methods, know-how in using register, panel, or survey datasets, and experience in using statistical software and programming;
    • ability to conduct independent scholarly work and publish research on the topics related to the project.

    Successful applicants have strong research orientation and fluency in English.

    The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation. The working language will be English.

The annual gross salary range of a postdoctoral researcher will be approx. € 41,000 – € 50,000, and of more senior University Researcher approx. € 51,000 – € 65,000 depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
