The Department of Electrical Power Engineering and Mechatronics of Tallinn University of Technology invites applications for a professor position in Energy Systems.

The Professor of Energy Systems conducts research in the areas of energy policy and economics, which involves analyzing the technical, economical, and environmental impacts of energy use, and developing policies and strategies to promote sustainable energy development. This research area includes topics such as energy market analysis, energy policy analysis, energy efficiency, and energy security. The goal of the professor is development and integration of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and biomass into the existing energy infrastructure.

The Professor shall be responsible for fostering the Energy Economics Research Group at the department with the goal to carry out comprehensive analysis among the following topics: 

  • global energy trade and electricity markets
  • energy and environmental policy
  • energy efficiency and energy chain economics
  • energy security
  • international cooperation, legislation and strategic documents in the field of power engineering.

The Professor's responsibilities:

  • fulfilling the role of the leader of the research group and enforcing the sustainable development of the research team's competence to solve challenges in the fields of science and business;
  • management of projects in the field of energy regulations, policy, economics, electricity markets, and service reliability;
  • distribute knowledge and share competence in EU power engineering regulations and familiarity with EU's long-term strategic plans and goals in the field of energy systems and markets;
  • applying to high-level funding in his or her field of expertise;
  • the organization and conducting of studies, teaching and mentoring students at master's and doctoral level in the subjects of energy economics, markets, and policy;
  • involving doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers in the research and development of the research group;
  • advising Estonian policymakers, representatives of the state, and society in the field of energy policy and regulations;
  • contribution to national strategic plans in the field of power engineering and energy economy;
  • work together with the private sector to define and co-develop novel measures, technologies, and business models.

Specific Requirements

Required for the position:

  • a doctoral degree or an equivalent qualification in electrical power engineering, energy technology, sustainable energy, energy management, (energy) policy, economics, IT or a similar field;
  • extensive and proven experience in carrying out analysis and project management in the field of energy systems;
  • strong publication record that proves the ability for high quality and relevant research in the area of energy systems;
  • recognized as a top specialist in his/her field in an enterprise or the public sector;
  • excellent teaching skills, teaching experience for at least 5 years; 
  • successful supervision of at least 2 doctoral theses; 
  • the total volume of competition-based financing received in the last 5 years with his or her significant participation is more than 200 thousand €;
  • preparation of the methodology of several courses (incl. courses taught in English) and creation of teaching materials and aids (used mainly for academic activities related to his/her work);
  • excellent standard of spoken and written English.

The following gives an advantage when applying for the position:

  • significant experience would be strongly appreciated in one or several application domains, such as experience in carrying out long-term analysis of energy systems and markets with modelling, forecasting methods, predictive analytics, and optimization methods, e.g., rational agents;
  • having energy and willingness to work with and lead a young research team;
  • being the author or translator-editor of at least one textbook for higher education institutions or an equivalent teaching aid;
  • being a member of an international conference committee;
  • being active and outstanding spokesman in his/her field of expertise;
  • having initiative in finding funding and competing for it, including in cooperation with other universities.
