Offer Description

The Department of Software Science of TalTech invites applications to fill in a postdoctoral researcher position. The position is formed under the MariCybERA project (ERA Chair on Maritime Cybersecurity in TalTech), which involves experts from the Centre for Maritime Cybersecurity (in Estonian Maritime Academy) and the Centre for Digital Forensics and Cyber Security (Department of Software Science).

The goals of the post are to:

  • conduct research on cyber security of maritime systems;
  • disseminate research results in top-tier conferences and journals;
  • help to supervise graduate students in the Centre for Digital Forensics and Cyber Security and have the opportunity to contribute to teaching.

CONTEXT

Maritime domain plays a key role in national and world-wide transportation and logistics. The complex and highly integrated maritime systems involving ships and port networks are a lucrative target for malicious actors. A sector, which traditionally focuses on physical safety and security, is now also required to resist cyber attacks. The advent of AI-based systems poses additional novel security challenges in the domain.

This position aims to explore the evolving challenges of cyber security in maritime domain and conduct cutting-edge research about cyber security threats and potential countermeasures. Studying complex cyber attack scenarios, developing advanced security monitoring and cyber attack detection methods and proposing advanced threat assessment approaches are some research directions that can be pursued.

Publishing in high-impact venues and writing project proposals for securing funds are among the primary responsibilities of the candidate. TalTech has established an experimental cyber security lab to conduct cyber attacks in a controlled environment and evaluate the effectiveness of defence mechanisms. The candidate will also contribute to the enhancement of this lab with additional capabilities.

We seek a candidate who excels in cooperating with an interdisciplinary team consisting of maritime experts, cyber security researchers and industrial partners. This postdoctoral fellow position is for up to 18 months, which can be extended based on the performance of the candidate and available funding opportunities.

Employment contract period: 1 July 2024 - 31 December 2025.
Monthly gross salary for the position: 3000 euros.
