Postdoctoral position in Systems Biology of Gas Fermentation

University of Tartu, Estonia and a leading biotechnology company LanzaTech, USA are collaborating for large-scale systems-level quantification of gas-fermenting acetogen genotype-phenotype relationships.


University of Tartu (UT), ranked in the top 2% of universities of the world, established the ERA Chair in Gas Fermentation Technologies in 2019 with the aim to address global challenges of biosustainability through integration of gas fermentation technologies with systems and synthetic biology. LanzaTech is the biotechnology industry leader in gas fermentation developing sustainable waste-to-chemical bioprocesses. This project builds upon the recently developed cutting-edge systems biology platform (Valgepea et al. 2017, Cell Systems; Valgepea et al.  2017, Metabolic Engineering; Valgepea et al. 2018, Biotechnology for Biofuels) to quantify gas-fermenting acetogen metabolism at unprecedented scale.

UT is seeking for a postdoc to lead large-scale systems-level quantification of gas-fermenting acetogen genotype-phenotype relationships. Duration of project is 4 years. Position reports to Dr Kaspar Valgepea, Group Leader of ERA Chair in Gas Fermentation Technologies.


The postdoc will be screening a large-scale strain library followed by detailed phenotype characterisation of selected genotypes in bioreactor cultures using systems biology tools.


UT is seeking for a highly motivated, ambitious, and creative postdoc with experience in microbiology and systems biology. Experience with anaerobic techniques and operating bioreactors is a plus. A PhD in Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or in a related field is required.
