Offer Description

The Department of of Materials and Environmental Technology invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in wood composite materials.

The goal of the position is to conduct research, development, and teaching in the field of wood composite materials technology.


As a member of Laboratory of Wood Technology, Department of Materials and Environmental Technology, School of Engineering, you will:

  • organise, lead, and perform research and development in the field of wood composite materials, focusing on sustainable and efficient use of wood resources to produce wood composite materials, enhancement of low-quality hardwood species by their use in new wood composite materials, development and testing of bioadhesives in new wood composite materials, high-strength fibre and composite materials based on wood pulp and chemical cellulose;
  • develop cooperation with other research and development institutions and companies;
  • take care of the development of the necessary infrastructure for research and teaching;
  • perform professional study, research and development activities in the field of wood composite materials technology in a balanced load corresponding to the regulation on academic career management in TalTech;
  • supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students in the related fields;
  • organise cooperation with academic, public and private sector in the related fields of applications;
  • serve as an expert and advisor to professionals and a communicator to wide public in wood composite materials and applications;
  • publish scientific papers of research and development results;
  • carry out teaching development activities in cooperation with the wood pulp technology professor in the field of wood pulp and other lignocellulosic biomass technologies at a modern methodological and educational technological level;
  • organize academic studies and educational development activities in the field of wood composite materials technology;
  • acquire competition-based funding to support one's field of activity;
  • promote business cooperation, apply collaboration contracts with industry.

The position is fixed term for maximum 8 years since taking up the position, depending on the results of an intermediate attestation.

Specific Requirements
  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in one of the following fields: wood science and technology, wood chemistry, wood composite materials, composite materials, polymer materials, material science;
  • maximum 10 years from earning the PhD degree (not including maternal or paternal leave, or mandatory military service);
  • international professional or research experience (including post-doctoral research);
  • demonstrated experience as a researcher, including publication of the results as the first/leading author within last 5 years; Web of Science or SCOPUS h-index at least 6 (a higher level is considered as an advantage);
  • successful experience in applying for research funding within last 5 years;
  • specific experience in bioadhesives for veneer and plywood applications;
  • demonstrated experience in teaching at BSc and MSc level and (co-)supervision of MSc or PhD students within last 5 years is considered an advantage;
  • advanced English, intermediate Estonian*. 

* In case the candidate does not speak Estonian, then by the end of the first attestation period, during 5 years from taking up the position we expect Estonian language skills to be acquired at the level of B2.
