Senior Maintenance Civil Engineer II, Office of Maintenance

Reports to: Director of Operations and Maintenance, Architecture and Civil

Purpose: The principal function of the job holder is to assist the director of operations and maintenance, architecture and civil, in supervising and executing all engineering design and planning required to support the physical plant operations for The American University in Cairo (AUC). He/she will be responsible for managing the maintenance projects’ finances and resources. In addition, he/she will be responsible for the engineering design, supervision of all civil, architectural, and finishing works, and ascertaining the quality of the work. He/she will ensure that the contractors properly execute all contract documents represented by working drawings and specifications. Also, establish and maintain a professional working relationship with architects, engineers, testing labs, general contractors, subcontractors, University personnel, and the general public.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and proofreading plans, specifications, codes, and shop drawings
  • Designing maintenance strategies, procedures, and methods
  • Preparing and/or analyzing large-scale building maintenance project plans, specifications, and feasibility studies to ensure contract, specifications, standards, governing regulations and codes, and sound engineering practices are followed
  • Preparing cost estimates and cost alternatives for proposed maintenance plans
  • Managing a staff of tradespeople and other employees working in carpentry, metal, flooring, locks, and painting through subordinate supervisors
  • Creating technically sound and cost-effective engineering solutions to difficulties encountered during the design or building of large-scale maintenance projects
  • Coordinating, planning, and carrying out building maintenance projects
  • Assessing and resolving engineering and administrative issues
  • Advising and consulting with private architects, engineers, and building contractors on the construction and/or restoration of public buildings and related facilities
  • Providing direction to contract workforces or in-house forces for the execution of various facility maintenance projects throughout the institution by supervising contract construction efforts in creating in-house cost estimates, sketches, drawings, and specifications
  • Check and verify all materials stored on and off-site for payment and materials used in maintenance against submittals. Accurately monitor material ledgers to determine if quantities remaining in the estimate are sufficient to complete the maintenance project in the field
  • Organizing the acquisition and delivery of materials and equipment
  • Leading/coordinating inspections for AUC buildings (indoors/outdoors/furniture) and submitting reports to include: building conditions, architectural and engineering requirements, general conditions, and descriptions of activities and work to be performed
  • Ensure construction work complies with all engineering standards, codes, specifications, design instructions, sketches, change orders, and safety
  • Ensuring the maintenance project conforms to all legal, health, and safety requirements
  • Ensuring maintenance projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time
  • Monitoring maintenance project completion status and presenting progress reports at the end of each quarter
  • Provide technical engineering information and interpretation of plans, detail sheets, and specifications for contractors
  • Communicating with clients and a wide range of specialists, such as architects and subcontractors
  • Responsible for maintaining/fixing AUC’s furniture
  • Creating job specifications and overseeing tendering procedures
  • Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of maintenance projects

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from a recognized institution is required

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant field experience

Skills:

  • Experience estimating and managing performed work activities and subcontracted work
  • Proficient with computer software used in the construction industry
  • Understands the means and methods of maintenance associated with construction and renovation
  • Has a working knowledge of civil, architectural, mechanical, and electrical work
  • Has a working knowledge of the cost of goods and services; has a demonstrated ability to solicit, evaluate and manage the price, schedule, and quality objectives of individual maintenance projects
  • Understands the sequencing of work and the strategy of creating effective maintenance project schedules
  • Ability to detect errors in construction maintenance projects
  • Understands maintenance project cost control and change order management
  • Knowledge of commonly-accepted maintenance safety/environmental and work practices in applicable disciplines
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical capabilities with a focus on achieving results
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Client-focused, highly autonomous, and able to work under pressure
  • Leadership and decision-making skills
  • Excellent computer skills such as Microsoft Office software, ACAD, Photoshop, and 3D Max)
