Reports to: Managing Editor

Purpose: The main purpose of this role is to assist the managing editor to supervise and schedule 30-50 new book titles annually from manuscript transmittal through to printed and bound books.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Assist the managing editor with planning and managing the editorial process from the raw manuscript phase to production
  • Assist the managing editor with the management of select books, assigned either internally, or to external project managers
  • Supervise the progress of each assigned book through to publication: the editing of the manuscript, the page composition, and final approval of inside pages and jacket for press electronic conversion
  • Manage, train, and supervise a wide network of freelance copyeditors, translators, proofreaders, indexers, design/layout suppliers, and printing partners
  • Coordinate with the managing editor, production manager, and editorial staff to ensure the organization and quality of images and that relevant permissions are obtained
  • Plan and approve jacket designs with the managing editor, production manager, editorial departmental members, and sales
  • Ensure manuscripts and transliterations are formatted in line with AUCP house style
  • Schedule and attend meetings with authors, translators, illustrators, designers, freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers to discuss and coordinate work in progress
  • Perform other related duties as requested by direct supervisor

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement : 

  • B.A. degree, preferably in the humanities

Experience :

  • Minimum of three years of previous professional experience in editing or equivalent

Skills :

  • English to native-speaker standard
  • Good knowledge of Arabic, both written and spoken
  • Excellent computer skills
  • A methodical approach to work and an eye for detail
  • A thorough understanding of grammar and a feeling for language
  • Excellent project management skills, particularly the ability to juggle many and often conflicting priorities at the same time
