Reports to: Assistant Director for Operations and Engineering Services

Purpose: The job holder plays a crucial role in bringing stories and event coverages about research, student life, programs and people to a variety of audiences across our digital channels serving The American University in Cairo’s (AUC) community. Working on assignment and in a self-motivated capacity, the Officer, AUC TV Field production will work within a group on all facets of events that AUC TV chooses to cover and field shooting. He/she also coordinates and assigns shooting tasks to students and fellows working within AUC TV framework, assists the shooting and production aspect of approximately 8 Television and digital Journalism (TVDJ) and Journalism and Mass Communication (JRMC) courses per week; graduate and undergraduate, student assignments and lab work. The job holder will closely work with graduate students in their assignments including capstone projects as well as with the rest of the AUC TV team for timely delivery of projects and requirement necessary for proper editing and for the studio component of productions.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate and plan the filed production aspect of AUC TV operations which includes the creative process of planning, shooting locations, selecting equipment, camera angles and the crew to be used
  • Serve as cameraman and producer for on- and off-campus events covered by AUC TV as well as Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) events and Kamal Adham Center events
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute pre-production workflow to ensure delivery of timely and accurate video footage to be handed to the post production cycle for editing and graphics
  • Act as quality control for material shot by students. This entails enforcing the appropriate guidelines followed by students during shooting for audio and video recording, lighting and video formats and making sure they abide by these rules and reporting back when they do not fit the guidelines. Contingency case and backup solutions must be proposed in case of technical issues
  • Report to the assistant director for operations on problems that meet the students during shooting and advise on best practices to overcome them
  • Report to the assistant director for operations on weekly coverage program and resource management
  • Report to assistant director and professors on progress of students in assigned task both in coursework and fellowship field assignments
  • Guide graduate students in all field equipment use for projects including AUC TV projects assigned to fellowship students
  • Propose ideas for shows and stories for coverage, propose production schedules taking into account resources allocation
  • Assist students in attaining international production standards that allow AUCTV participation in international competitions
  • Guide undergraduate students in use of professional cameras
  • Assist in the setup and operation of necessary field and studio cameras, microphones, lighting equipment
  • Work and guide a team of student contributors for coverage of on campus events for AUC TV
  • Planning, producing, and assist in editing television/web video productions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s in mass communication
  • Master’s in television and digital journalism is an asset

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience, including 3 years of demonstrated professional video experience or a portfolio of work that demonstrates proficiency with all stages of video production required.

  • Proficiency with broadcast quality field cameras and Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras as well as basic studio operation
  • Proficiency with techniques used for mobile journalism
  • Television and/or video pre-production, production, and post-production methods, practices and procedures
  • Have hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to effectively operate associated television and video equipment
  • Multi and single camera production and editing workflow
  • Awareness of copyright regulations and privacy laws
  • Editing techniques to produce varying effects and messages
