Reports to: Technical Operations Manager and Industrial Liaison

Purpose: The job holder is responsible for operating and maintaining the assigned labs, providing the necessary support for faculty, researchers, teaching assistants, graduate and undergraduate students and external customers; including supervising the installation, operation and maintenance of lab equipment , assisting in procurement vendors including market surveys and the collection of price quotations, and spare parts, training equipment users, assuring equipment operation, setting up the equipment operation schedule, organizing work flow, ensuring lab safety, and representing the department of mechanical engineering in university and school events. In addition, the job holder is responsible for assisting instructors of courses to which s/he is assigned as a teaching assistant in facilitating learning activities inside and outside the classroom and the laboratory.

Principal Accountabilities:  

  • Ensure assigned labs’ readiness for any technical task within its predetermined mission
  • Operate and maintain all assigned labs’ assets (machines, equipment, tools and infrastructure) under the guidance of the faculty lab supervisor
  • Implement and report all labs’ technical work instructions, Lab needs and activities to the faculty lab supervisor
  • Run trials of the work to be carried out by students prior to the lab session
  • Set up, conduct, and explain (to students) experiments in the assigned labs
  • Assist faculty lab supervisors in the development of lab manuals and procedures
  • With the approval of the faculty lab supervisor, facilitate the projects and research endeavors of the undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers and professor’s in their research activities and grants and engineering and science services
  • Stay up to date and report (to lab faculty supervisors) on new and required developments in fields related to the assigned labs
  • Procure consumables and simple supplies from local market vendors, and perform any required market survey
  • Contacting the vendors to get price quotations for any required items
  • Maintain an updated inventory of all lab items
  • Ensure smooth operation of the lab in supporting instructors, students, and course requirements, while maintaining proper inter-lab relations
  • Continuously train subordinates to maintain their competence in using all the labs’ assets
  • Carry out various manual tasks using manual tools (where applicable)
  • Ensure safe and clean working environment within the assigned labs and their premises, in coordination with The American University in Cairo (AUC) health and safety department
  • Apply safety regulations and precautions, safe work practices, and immediately report any safety violation incident/condition or potential hazards
  • Monitor first aid kits, fire-fighting equipment and safety gears in coordination with the AUC clinic and health and safety department
  • Supervise the cleanliness of the lab workplace, equipment and tools
  • Supporting students in carrying out experimental work in labs
  • Assist in all required duties related to students in coordination with the faculty supervisor
  • Assist in preparing course material under the guidance of the course instructor
  • Conducting revision and/or problem sessions which do not require the introduction of new materials to students under the guidance of the course instructor
  • Leading in-class discussions and group activities which do not require the introduction of new materials to students under the guidance of the course instructor
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement

  • Bachelor degree in mechanical or mechatronics engineering

Experience

  • At least one year of experience as a lab engineer or a similar experience

Skills

  • Advanced English skills, oral and written
  • Good Arabic skills, oral and written
  • Good communication skills in both English and Arabic language
  • Good time management and planning skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good computer skills and working experience with the main Microsoft Office software
