Reports to: Executive Director, Development, Department of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations

Purpose: The Associate Director/ Director is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and prospective donors in support of the University’s strategic and fundraising priorities. He/she will develop strategies and partner with diverse individuals, internally and externally, to meet these objectives. A member of a wider team of fundraising professionals, he/she will follow, implement and advance best practices in higher education fundraising.

Responsibilities:

  • Pro-actively manage and advance a portfolio of 125-150 active donors and prospective donors to secure philanthropic gifts (6-8 figures) and other financial support for the University’s strategic and fundraising priorities
  • Cultivate donors and prospective donors; developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies, working closely with University leadership, faculty, administration, volunteers, and others as appropriate
  • Meet ambitious targets including numbers of meetings, asks, and proposals submitted, and annual financial goals
  • Actively participate in the identification and cultivation of new prospective donors
  • Pro-actively undertake donor and prospective donor meetings and visits, and ensure they are followed-up with detailed and timely contact reports
  • Partner with colleagues in institutional advancement and faculty to develop and draft proposals as necessary
  • Implement and/or support high quality, consistent and sustainable donor communications and events to advance donor relationships, donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Partner with colleagues in advancement services to develop and implement stewardship strategies
  • Ensure that all University and office policies and procedures related to fundraising and advancement services, are observed and implemented, aspiring to best practice
  • Collaborate with colleagues across institutional advancement on fundraising and related strategies, sharing best practices and advancing shared objectives
  • Ensure highest level of professional standards related to ethical behavior, a positive attitude, sensitivity to others, and personal discretion
  • Travel regularly to meet donors and, as necessary

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10-15 years’ professional experience in same field
  • Previous experience in major gift fundraising at a university, a non-profit or an international organization is preferred
  • Significant experience in relationship management with individuals of diverse backgrounds to achieve specific objectives
  • Experience of managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting ambitious targets, and delivering work to tight deadlines
  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills, including developing plans and timelines, setting and evaluating progress against goals, and meeting tight deadlines
  • An engaging, collaborative and confident communication style, effective with both individuals and groups and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work effectively both individually and in teams
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with a wide array of constituents

  • Creative and diplomatic skills, and an ability to understand and empathize with the perspective of diverse individuals
  • Proven ability to develop and manage effective relationships across all levels and functional areas of an organization
  • Ability to collaborate and influence at a high level

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong ethical behavior, and an ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and salesforce database
