The Role of the Dean
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is charting a path toward the next century of liberal arts education that promotes interdisciplinary study, innovative research, and heuristic approaches that further the legacy of liberal arts education in Egypt, the Middle East, and the international community. HUSS is committed to providing students with the tools to actively engage the challenges that face humanity.
Thus, the American University in Cairo seeks a Dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences who inherently understands and promotes the value of a liberal arts education. The successful candidate will be able to effectively communicate the importance of the liberal arts to the future of an international university and be committed to developing the excellence of its faculty, as well as recruiting and supporting promising students. The successful candidate will also possess experience in academic administration and have demonstrated scholarly excellence in a relevant field.
Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the chief academic and administrative leader for the School and serves as an essential member of the university leadership. The Dean will set the strategic direction for HUSS, with the responsibility for advancing the mission and operations through thoughtful personnel decisions, general administration and management, creative budgeting and resource management, academic program support, and fundraising. The Dean will promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, including the development of collaborative academic programs, in addition to creating opportunities for more robust research.
Key Priorities for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean will be to:
- Create an innovative strategic vision for the humanities and social sciences programs that leverages strengths of a liberal arts education, HUSS faculty, and AUC at-large;
- Articulate the School's value and elevate its visibility and profile, both internally and externally;
- Recruit and retain talented faculty, foster their development, and supervise the promotion and tenure process;
- Enhance the international diversity of the student body and faculty;
- Cultivate new opportunities for research and increase the research profile of HUSS;
- Spearhead a student-focused agenda that attracts students and ensures a high-quality educational experience;
- Build relationships within HUSS and across campus that promote interdisciplinary and collaborative opportunities;
- Promote faculty participation in shared governance and establish strong consultative relationships with department chairs and faculty;
- Increase the financial resources of the School through fundraising and revenue generating activities.
Characteristics of the successful candidate will include:
Leadership: An established record of effective, strong, and collaborative leadership and decision-making. Demonstrated administrative and budgeting experience. A history of creating a culture of collegiality, as well as developing and promoting shared governance between faculty and administration. A relationship builder and galvanizer with a proven capacity to formulate and articulate a shared vision, to persuade a wide range of audiences of its value, and to engage others in its implementation. The ability to recruit outstanding new faculty as well as retain the School's strongest faculty. Experience engaging with, recruiting, and retaining international faculty, as well as those from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Familiarity with appointment, promotion, and tenure procedures. Ability to motivate and inspire others to strive continuously for academic excellence.
Academic Background: Outstanding academic credentials and a passion for academic excellence. Scholarly accomplishments and national/international recognition in one of the disciplines represented by or related to HUSS. An interdisciplinary background would be particularly attractive. Credentials for appointment at Full Professor level, including Ph.D. or recognized equivalent.
Focus on Students: Genuine investment in the School's teaching mission and the importance of providing undergraduate and graduate students with the highest-quality educational experience. Must understand and value the importance of an internationally diverse student body and mechanisms for recruitment, retention, and support of all students.
Financial Management Experience: Record of operational leadership and fiscal management demonstrating excellence, growth, and financial effectiveness. Possess strong financial acumen and entrepreneurial strategies.
Fundraising: Genuine appetite and aptitude to engage in fundraising, ideally with experience in strengthening philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Commitment to diversifying revenue streams.
Personal Qualities: The highest standards of personal and academic integrity. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a focus on openness, transparency and building trust. Emotional intelligence, intellectual curiosity and listening skills. Innovative, creative problem-solver and advocate, who uses sound judgement. Entrepreneurial drive. Culturally sensitive with a demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive community between students, faculty, and staff from varied backgrounds.
