About The American University in Cairo:

About the Department and Program:

The AUC Theatre program is part of the Department of the Arts within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Department of the Arts includes: Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, Film and Graphic Design. The Theatre program is the oldest unit in the Department of the Arts and the founding art program at AUC. There are currently 55 majors and minors in the Theatre program and over 550 students enrolled in Theatre classes each year. The program produces 3-4 faculty directed main-stage plays per year and 2 student productions per year. Productions occur at both the New Cairo campus and the downtown Tahrir campus. The Theatre program hosts guest artists and has a visible presence in the Cairo theatre community. There are currently 4 full time Theatre faculty members and 24 full time members in the Department of the Arts.


Job Description:

The Theatre Program in the Department of the Arts welcomes applications for a fixed-term position of Associate Professor of Practice with an expertise in the area of costume design to begin in the Fall of 2024. The Theatre program currently offers both a major and a minor and has an active performance season. We seek a collaborative and versatile colleague with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate students. This position will teach two courses per semester in costume design and related fields, as well as design and build costumes for our four mainstage shows, two per semester. This position will teach courses in costume design, other areas of design if appropriate, make-up and other theatre courses as needed and based on expertise. The faculty member will be expected to maintain an active international practice and/or research agenda and be involved in advising, department and university committees and arts outreach. The ideal faculty member is a practicing artist and scholar with an interest and experience in developing strong theatre artists within the context of a liberal arts university.


Requirements:

Candidates should hold an MFA in Costume Design or Theatre with the ability to design, lead the costuming area, teach costume design and teach other Theatre courses. Successful candidates should have an ongoing program of practice and/or research and university experience teaching in a liberal arts educational system. Candidates should also have an interest in working and living in the Middle East and in a cross-cultural environment.
