The AUC Libraries and Learning Technologies School holds the largest English-language research collection in the region and are an active and integral leader of the University's pursuit of excellence in all academic and scholarly programs. LLT holds an array of primary materials, archives, special collections, rare books, and AUC records that are critical to research in the many areas of study and are of great importance to researchers in the region and abroad.  LLT is a teaching unit with a Library Instruction Course that is a pass-fail core requirement for all undergraduate students at AUC and it is part of the AUC liberal arts core.  All AUC graduates are expected to have passed the LALT course to complete graduation, regardless of their field of studies. LALT 1020, the core requirement library instruction course, is central to the student success work conducted by LLT.  The course is an opportunity to further student success, graduate work, and lifelong learning in a global society were information is fundamental in private and professional realms.


Job Description:

The Associate or Assistant University Archivist for Records Management, a non-tenure track faculty position, under the direction of American University in Cairo's University Archivist, will ensure that records and other information in all formats are managed according to best practices and standards. In leading records management operations, she or he will develop and implement policies and monitor compliance, engage in outreach and training, supervise staff and oversee facilities, and build effective working relationships with units across the university. The position holder will address the challenges of AUC's hybrid information environment, supporting the transition to increasingly digital recordkeeping by collaborating with university information technology personnel on the implementation of the Laserfiche content management system. The appointed Associate or Assistant University Archivist for Records Management will lead AUC in establishing state-of-the-art practices and systems for record management in compliance with Egyptian laws and requirements set up by the non-profit status of the University.

  • Lead records management operations including transfer/ingest, appraisal, description, retrieval, and disposition (destruction or archival accessioning) of university records across all formats. Supervise Records Management staff members and operations of the records center facilities.
  • Provide guidance and training to university personnel (including university unit liaisons) about proper management of records, in digital, paper, and other formats; assess current practices and needs via records surveys of university offices; monitor compliance with policies, laws, and best practices; develop ways of promoting and expanding services provided.
  • Work with university offices, in collaboration with AUC Information Technology personnel, in implementing and employing Laserfiche content management system for digital and digitized records.
  • Develop and update records policies including Records Retention Schedule, collaborating with university offices and administration.
  • Explore adoption of new systems and products for processes like email archiving and physical records management.
  • Participate in accessioning, arrangement, and description of archival records, including use of ArchivesSpace archival content management system. Support the mission of the University Archives through other projects as assigned, such as web archiving, exhibitions, and oral history. 


Requirements:

Master's Degree in information/archival/library science, preferably with records management specialization.

  • Two or more years' experience working in a records management or archives setting, preferably a university environment, or related experience with involvement in records management activities.
  • Strong knowledge of professional records management and archival principles, techniques, and standards across all formats of records including applicable laws in Egypt and in the United States.
  • Understanding of best practices and processes for capture, preservation, and management of digital/electronic records. Experience with digital/electronic content management systems (like Laserfiche or similar) and archival content management systems (like ArchivesSpace or similar) highly desirable.
  • Project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and supervise as well as lead innovation at AUC in the field of records management.
  • Strong service orientation and ability to develop effective working relationships across varied university offices and units. Ability to work collaboratively and supervise a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse international backgrounds.
