Two Postdoctoral positions in Optimization of renewable plants and energy systems

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of wind energy and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia, then we have an opportunity!

We are looking for 2 highly motivated and skilled candidates to join us as Postdoctoral researchers within the Grid Integration and Energy Systems (GRID) section. The starting date is as soon as possible (expected to be 15 April 2022, or soon after).

DTU Wind Energy is a world-leading wind energy department that puts knowledge to work through cutting-edge research, innovation, and development of technology. We have internationally leading research environments, and we prioritize strong cross-disciplinary collaborations within DTU, with leading international universities and facilities, and with private companies. We have a strong focus on the development of wind energy as the backbone of the future energy system and collaborate with the full sector.

You will be part of the international team carrying out research in the GRID section where the working language is English. Our research in GRID is dedicated to Grid Integration and Energy Systems related to wind energy in general.

Please look at https://windenergy.dtu.dk/english/research/research-sections/grd for more details on the type of activities we undertake.

Context
By joining our team, you will be working in an international environment and cooperate with some of the largest industrial players as well as academic researchers.

The focus of your work as a postdoctoral researcher is on one or both of the following:

  • Energy system modelling and investment optimization, and power system balancing
  • Sizing and energy management system for renewable energy plants

We prefer that you are an expert in application of optimization methodologies for energy system studies and/or renewable plant design and operation. The focus is on applying mathematical tools in real life applications. Industrial experience is advantageous but not a requirement. Being open to multi-disciplinary research and teamwork is a must as you will work in close collaboration with other researchers in our department and our industrial partners.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The main purpose of the 2 postdoctoral fellowships will be to strengthen DTU Wind Energy’s competences in energy and power system studies and renewable energy plant design and operation. You are welcome to apply for the position if you have background and interest for one or both of the following:

Tasks for contribution on power and energy system studies:

  • Analysis of large scale (e.g., Europe) energy systems with high share of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources
  • Development of DTU Balancing Tool Chain for power system balancing studies

Tasks for contribution on renewable energy plants:

  • Sizing and electrical design of grid-connected hybrid power plants for electricity production (HyDesign tool)
  • Sizing and electrical design of grid-connected hybrid energy plants for hydrogen, ammonia, and methane production (HyDesign tool)
  • Energy management system of hybrid power and energy plants (HyDesign tool)

Additionally, you are expected to contribute through:

  • Education and co-supervision of MSc and PhD projects
  • Idea generation, close collaboration with the research team and supporting project proposals
  • Dissemination and communication

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). The degree should be in the field of electrical/energy/computer engineering or similar. The candidate is expected to start as soon as possible.

The successful candidate is required to have:

  • Significant experience with optimization
  • Knowledge of power systems and energy markets
  • Experience with energy system optimization (for power and energy system studies) and/or energy system management (for renewable energy plant design and operation)
  • Experience with tools like python, GAMS, Matlab
  • Knowledge on wind energy, statistics, machine learning, and shell scripting can be considered as added advantage
  • Ability and willingness to interact with industrial stakeholders and academic partners
  • Motivation to publish in high quality journals
  • Fluency in communicating and reporting in English
