Tenure-track Assistant Professor/Associate professorship in Theatre and Performance Studies

The Department of of Arts and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Copenhagen University (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor/associate professorship in Theatre and Performance Studies to be filled by 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies primarily works with art and cultural products, cultural theory and history and cultural dissemination. The institute provides a framework for international research and higher education from BA to PhD level. Theatre and Performance Studies covers both traditional theater science disciplines as well as performance studies and theory.

Content of for both positions
We are looking for applicants that can contribute to the development of the section through research and teaching driven both by a classical and critical humanistic interest in knowledge production with projects at the core of theatre and performance studies, and by the potential arising from the section’s many relations to institutions, artists and organizations outside academia. We therefore seek applicants able to manage large projects and research tasks relevant to the profile of the section as well as to the trade and our societal surroundings, which are rooted in the field of performing arts and will contribute to strengthening our research output, teaching and sharing of knowledge with a wider public.

We are more specifically seeking the following competences:

  • Research and teaching experiences in the following areas of Theatre and Performance Studies:
  • Applied theatre and performance
  • Performance/dance/corporeal expressions
  • Audience and public relations and audience development
  • Research experience from interdisciplinary projects
  • Skills in aesthetic and cultural analysis within the area of Theatre and Performance Studies, including interdisciplinary and cross-cultural analysis
  • Experience in collaborating with governmental as well as private stakeholders, organisations, and cultural institutions

Qualification requirements for Tenure-track assistant professor

Tenure-track assistant professors must hold an academic record demonstrating internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized potential to make a future impact.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be taken into account. Applicants’ outreach qualifications, including the ability to attract external funding, will also be considered.

Within a reasonable period of time (3-6 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and students.

Associate professor
In connection with the appointment of the position of associate professor, we emphasise that the applicant has research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved by satisfactory employment as an assistant professor or tenure track assistant professor.

The applicant is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the department, including examinations and administration, and to manage research projects, provide pedagogical supervision, support assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.

The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Hence the assessment of applicants’ qualifications will assign equal weight to documented competences in the field of teaching, pedagogy and didactics as in the field of research, research collaboration and research organisation. Applicants with documentation of excellent teaching skills including experience with development of teaching and with experiences and reflections on how most effectively to integrate research and teaching activities will be given priority.

  • Significant skills in regard to external funding
  • Interest in collaborative research work and in the development of own academic leadership skills

Applicants may choose a maximum of five publications for assessment, of which at least three must have been published within the five years immediately preceding the deadline for applications. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and named from 1 to 5.

Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.

Only material in English, German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed.

Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee.  All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Salary and conditions of employment
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). It is possible to negotiate salary supplements based on qualifications.

The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have further agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, whereby the pension contribution will be paid out as salary.

The salary range starts for Assistant Professor at DKK 35,700 (EUR 4,800,) + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.
