Senior Scientist

Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Feb 2022

The Cell Division and Cytoskeleton group, headed by Dr. Marin Barisic, is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic senior scientist to join the Danish Cancer Society Research Center.

About us

The Danish Cancer Society is a democratic association that stands on a solid foundation, with an active position both nationally and internationally. The association provides help and advice to cancer patients and their families as well as excellent research and education at a high level. The Danish Cancer Society has its own research center, which consists of approx. 20 independent research groups with approx. 200 researchers from more than 20 different countries.

Research in the Cell Division and Cytoskeleton group focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying chromosomal and cytoskeletal dynamics, whose alterations during the cell cycle promote aneuploidy and metastasis, and consequently facilitate tumorigenesis. We investigate:

  • mechanisms of chromosome congression and segregation during mitosis
  • regulation of microtubule dynamics during cell division and cell migration
  • the impact of tubulin post-translational modifications on the activity of cytoskeletal motor proteins and their roles in chromosomal and cellular movements

About the position

The successful candidate will join an exciting project focused on the roles of post-translational modifications of tubulin (the so-called tubulin code) in cell division. To understand how tubulin code affects cancer-related processes, the project will investigate the impact of tubulin modifications on the activity and function of molecular motors and microtubule-associated proteins. This will include application of cutting-edge molecular cell biology and biochemistry methods, such as gene editing-based generation of stable cell lines for labeling and rapid targeted degradation of endogenous proteins, advanced live-cell imaging (including super-resolution microscopy), and protein production and purification.

About you

We are looking for a highly driven, motivated and enthusiastic candidate with the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in molecular/cell biology, biochemistry or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of postdoctoral research experience in an internationally renowned research center
  • Excellent technical skills and strong experience with molecular, biochemical and cell biology-based techniques, especially microscopy; experience in cell division and cytoskeleton research will be an advantage
  • A strong publication profile, ideally related to the area of cell division and cytoskeleton
  • Strong experience in supervision at pre-graduate and/or post-graduate level
  • Strong experience in effective management and delivery of projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

We offer

You will be part of an inspiring and international smoke-free work environment. The laboratories are equipped with modern interior and state-of-the-art technology, located in a pleasant and beautiful area near central Copenhagen. Our research facilities include a number of core facilities including microscopy, histology, bioinformatics and animal facilities. We have weekly seminars, invited speakers, postdoc and PhD associations as well as strong administrative and technical support. We offer several benefits for the personnel, such as an excellent canteen, a daily selection of free fruit and sport activities. The everyday working language in the laboratory is English.

Working conditions:

37 hours a week with lunch break included. A competitive salary with a range of benefits will be provided according to the current agreements between the Danish Cancer Society and the relevant trade union. Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

Additional information

More information can be obtained directly from group leader Marin Barisic, e-mail: [email protected]

Application and closing date for applications

Deadline for application is February 16, 2022. The selected candidates will be invited for an interview. The position is available earliest from April 01, 2022.

The application should be written in English and must be submitted electronically through our website: www.cancer.dk/om-os/stillinger

The application should contain:

  • A motivated letter of application
  • A short curriculum vitae
  • A copy of the PhD and MSc diploma
  • At least two references from previous working place

One in three Danes will at some point in their life be affected by cancer. Two out of three will become relatives. With so many people involved, the Danish Cancer Society wishes to bring people together in a strong and active community against cancer, where you as an employee can be part in making an important difference. The Danish Cancer Society is a democratic organisation, where local associations and volunteers contribute to reaching our goals of fewer people getting cancer, more surviving cancer and everyone getting the best possible life with and after cancer.
