Senior Researcher in Earth Observation and Arctic Surveillance

We seek a candidate for a Senior Researcher position within Earth Observation and Arctic Surveillance. The growing number of satellites and data from SAR and multispectral satellite images combined with e.g. ship transponder systems and radars make numerous new applications possible. We are especially focussed on marine situational awareness including detection and classification of vessels, icebergs, sea-ice, and the environment. Modern statistical methods and machine learning are central to the research for analysing the big data from satellites.

The position will also be responsible for the Center for Security which is point-of-contact for security technologies for all institutes at DTU. The Center comprises state-of-the-art research covering fields as Earth observation, Arctic surveillance, space situational awareness, rescue and environmental services, cybersecurity, sensor, drone and navigation systems, material technologies, and other applications related to security.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences within Earth observation, Arctic surveillance and Space situational awareness. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic and industrial partners and government agencies in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

• Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for PhD students
• Thrive through publication of your scientific work in international journals
• Consolidate and further expand our industrial and governmental network within the field of security technologies at the Center for Security
• Head the Center for Security at DTU

To be a successful candidate for the position, you must meet the following qualifications:

• You hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc.
• You have experience in a broad range of security technologies as e.g. Earth surveillance systems. Collaborations with government agencies and industry within security is valued.
• You have a strong research background in the fields of Earth Observation, Arctic Surveillance, SAR and multispectral imaging, space physics and security technologies in general
• You have experience in teaching and supervision.
• You have a successful record for attracting funding.
• You enjoy working with complex topics and are driven by pushing boundaries.
• You are a team player; you are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.
• You believe in dialogue and feedback as the best foundation for sound decision-making.
• You strive to develop talent amongst others.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education. If you do not have the necessary education, then it is possible to complete this requirement within a period of two years of appointment.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union. Starting date is 1/12 2021 or according to mutual agreement.
