The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a professorship in spatial planning with focus on rural landscapes commencing 1 October 2022 or soon thereafter.

Spatial planning as an academic discipline supports knowledge-based interventions in rural landscapes, with the objective to meet present and future needs in a sustainable manner with due respect to all the goods and services rural landscapes deliver and the various interests surrounding these. The services include agricultural production, as well as other important services such as biodiversity, climate regulation, water and cultural services. Landscape governance concern the institutions needed to develop collaboration between public agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders.

Spatial planning and governance plays a critical role in allocating land resources, in solving spatial problems of land sparing and land sharing in rural landscapes and in providing arenas for citizens and other actors to reimagine the future of the landscapes they live in. Also, in the ongoing transformations towards a CO 2 neutral society as well as in mitigating climate challenges and biodiversity decline and supporting sustainable products as part of the green economy spatial planning and governance have an important role to play.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should be internationally recognized within the field of Landscape Planning, Landscape Governance, Countryside Planning or Spatial Planning for Rural landscapes with special focus on some of the following issues:

  • Collaborative planning in rural settings
  • Spatial planning as a conflict resolution approach to diverting interest in land-use and resource managements
  • Design, implementation, and effects of spatial planning with focus on rural landscapes
  • Theory and practise of spatial planning and governance of rural landscapes
  • Multifunctional management of rural landscapes – with focus on the actors in landscape management and governance
  • Interface between spatial planning and the wider policy domains affecting rural landscapes

The candidate should have demonstrated a high ability to attract national and international research funding as well as experiences with research leadership and supervision of early career researchers. Strong interpersonal skills, international networks and experiences from interdisciplinary teaching and research e.g., integrating natural and social sciences are also highly appreciated.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Moreover, applicants must demonstrate leadership in developing and implementing educational programs within their research field.

Duties

Besides own research, the successful candidate is expected to stimulate and inspire scientific development within the research field, take research initiatives and explore cross disciplinary potentials within the department. The successful applicant will be required to develop new courses, teach and supervise students, conduct exams and assessment tasks, be engaged in fundraising, and carry out research training of research fellows and other staff members.

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) conducts research and education on the physical, chemical and biological environments of the Earth. We address historical as well as current and future perspectives, and interactions of ecosystems with societal and human systems. We aim to provide education and research in support of sustainable future solutions for society. We value scientific interactions among colleagues, cross-disciplinary interactions and care for the early career scientists. Within the department, the professorship will be placed in either the Section for Landscape Architecture and Planning’ or the Section for Geography.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
