Readvertisement: Postdoc on “Women in Science and Technology (WINST)"

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 16 Oct 2022

The Department of Strategy and Innovation (SI) at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is looking for a postdoc researcher. The postdoc position is limited to 3 years and connected to the project “Women in science and technology: career impediments and the child penalty” funded by Forte (Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare). Expected starting date around 1 January 2023. The starting date might be adjusted depending on when the right candidate is able to start.

About the project:
Scientific progress and innovation is critical for sustainable growth and equitable welfare and societies cannot afford that certain groups of citizens become marginalized at innovative work. This project will address the loss of innovative and scientific potential due to underrepresentation of women in science and technology. Gender inequalities in the general labor market have been related to the fact that women must endure a higher share of domestic responsibilities than their partners, while coping with the demands of their working life. The Nordic countries have long recognized some of the difficult trade-offs, responding through the introduction of ‘family-friendly’ policies where parents could stay on paid parental leave. However, there are potential adverse consequences of parental leave in high-skilled and knowledge-intensive jobs, since workers in science and technology suffer from a “burden of knowledge” and the time away from the job can lead to quick depreciation of knowledge. The project leverages micro data compiled on inventive (Denmark, Finland and Sweden) and publication (Denmark and Sweden) efforts and connected to administrative (register) data on individuals. This unique source of data will allow us to understand what distinguishes careers in science and technology and how women’s careers differ from those of men.

About the position:
The postdoc will become an integral part of the project, collaborating and co-authoring with a team of internationally recognized scholars based in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Sweden. Team members have all worked extensively on research questions associated with inventors and scientists and have substantial experience analyzing the role of gender in invention and science. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to acquire skills and to further build a strong research portfolio towards an academic career. The postdoc will assume a leading role in constructing, managing and econometrically analyzing large-scale datasets that combine micro data on inventions and publications with rich administrative registers across the Nordic countries. The daily workplace of the postdoc will be at the Copenhagen Business School. In order to maximize cross-institutional learning, researchers in the team will also work and interact across the Nordic countries, including shorter research stays at the participating universities.
