The Department of Geoscience (DG), Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applicants for a two-year post-doctoral position in numerical modelling of meltwater erosion under ice sheets as part of the ongoing project “Dynamical modelling of subglacial meltwater erosion during past and future glaciations”. The work revolves around building a numerical model of subglacial channelized drainage over soft beds, simulating the formation of tunnel valleys, and predicting the dynamics of erosion processes under the future ice sheets. The study will be utilizing a detailed geological model of parts of northern Germany, at the outskirt of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during major Quaternary glaciations. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Leibniz University Hannover, Germany.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in one or several disciplines including glaciology, hydrogeology, numerical methods, and high performance computing. Interest in quantifying geological processes and experience with numerical modelling are essential. The applicants must have a Ph.D. in either geoscience/geology, applied mathematics, physics, cryosphere research, or a related field by the time of appointment. The position is funded by the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung, Germany.
The Department
The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff including faculty, externally funded researchers, post-docs, Ph.D. students, and administrative and technical personnel. DG has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including Climate and Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources, and Deep Earth Systems. We have an outstanding research and teaching infrastructure including geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological laboratories, HF-laboratory, a class 100 metal-free clean-laboratory, and TCN dating facilities.

The place of work is the Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 2, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.
