Project Officer - Impact Assessment and Adaptation Analysis

UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP) is a leading international research and advisory institution on energy, climate and sustainable development. UDP is part of the Department for Technology, Management and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

As a collaborating center of UN Environment (UNEP), UDP works with a large range of international institutions, national governments, advisory agencies and research institutions, to assist developing countries in their efforts to move towards low carbon and climate resilient sustainable development. UDP has a staff of approximately 70 professionals from 20 different countries with backgrounds covering economics, science, geography, energy and environment planning. UDP currently implements project activities in more than 60 developing countries.     

The Impact Assessment and Adaptation Analysis section works on evidence-based assessments of the wider economic, social and environmental effects of climate adaptation and mitigation policies and actions, as well as on the climate implications of economic, social and environmental policies. The section supports the design, development and implementation of strategies and measures that effectively address climate change adaptation and sustainable development needs, with a primary focus on developing countries. This includes: the assessment of adaptation and resilience policy actions and results; measuring and tracking progress on adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development; and engaging with governments and non-state actors to enhance sustainable societal transformations. In each of these areas, the section is engaged in project implementation, research, capacity building and provision of technical support, combined with methodology development and piloting. In addition, the section provides policy advice and engages in knowledge dissemination.    

Currently, we are urgently seeking to recruit a Project Officer for a permanent position on the TAP track to join a team of 9 colleagues, starting as soon as possible after the successful candidate has been identified and ideally by mid to late July. The successful candidate will contribute to our work across adaptation assessment, tracking and transparency, private sector adaptation, impact assessment of mitigation and adaptation policies, and adaptation finance tracking.

Key tasks and responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Lead the development of tools and guidance materials within adaptation assessment, tracking and transparency.
  • Support the production of UNEP's Adaptation Gap Report;
  • Contribute to the section's work on private sector adaptation, and adaptation business models.
  • Contribute to the section's work on impact assessments of mitigation and adaptation actions and their contribution to sustainable development;
  • Contribute to the section's work on adaptation finance tracking;
  • Contribute to the development of scientific papers, briefs, and reports;
  • Other tasks as assigned by the head of section.

Selection Criteria
We are looking for a highly motivated team player with knowledge and understanding of climate change adaptation and impact assessment in the context of sustainable development and the UNFCCC, who meets the following criteria:

  • M.Sc. degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, sustainability studies, environmental economics, or other relevant field;
  • Understanding of the Paris Agreement, in particular of the Enhanced Transparency Framework;
  • Good knowledge of methods and approaches for adaptation assessment and tracking at aggregated levels (i.e. national and global-levels)
  • Good knowledge of the adaptation finance landscape, and methods and approaches for tracking adaptation finance
  • Good knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goal framework, including of the SDG targets and indicators, particularly in the context of impact assessment;
  • Good knowledge of private sector adaptation is an asset;
  • Strong analytical skills, an innovative mindset, and the ability to adapt to different tasks and workloads quickly and effectively;
  • Demonstrated excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills in English; proficiency in other languages, in particular Spanish and/or French is an asset
  • Ability to work effectively both individually as well as in teams, with people from different academic and cultural backgrounds;
  • Experience in preparing technical and/or policy-relevant reports and papers is considered a strong asset;
  • Experience in working with developing countries is an asset;

Terms of employment
UDP is part of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark and employees are university staff. The successful candidate will be employed in a full-time position according to the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The position is a permanent position.
