DTU, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a position as Professor in Sustainable Thermal Power. The professor will be affiliated to the Section for Thermal Energy.
Energy systems worldwide are currently undergoing major transitions towards sustainability-based on renewable energy sources, including solar, geothermal, wind, and biomass. The Section for Thermal Energy conducts research and teaching at the highest international level within thermal sciences focusing on engineering thermodynamics and effective heat transfer for supporting the transition towards sustainability. The research includes theoretical, numerical, and experimental analysis of heat-to-power conversion technologies, heat pumps, refrigeration systems, and thermal energy storage systems. The section has a scientific staff of about 35, including PhD students.
The professor’s research must span broadly within the field of sustainable thermal power-generating technologies, including numerical and experimental analysis of power cycles using low-temperature heat sources, heat transfer equipment, and turbomachinery. It is essential that the research is interdisciplinary and includes advanced numerical modelling based on the full range of dimensional approaches, experimentation, and techno-economic system optimization of power cycles. The research must relate to various applications within waste heat recovery for internal combustion engines on trucks and marine vessels, gas turbines, concentrating solar power, geothermal energy, as well as for thermal energy storage.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The professor will have a leading role within the Department’s research in low-temperature heat-to-power conversion technologies.
The professor must strengthen research and innovation efforts within the research field at the Department by generating new research projects that involve staff across disciplines. Research activities are also expected to be conducted in cooperation with relevant groups at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and more broadly at DTU, as well as nationally and internationally. Hence, the successful candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of participating in international research activities, and in attracting and managing research projects, also in close collaboration with industry. The successful candidate is expected to have strong international collaborations with leading research groups in the fields of heat to power conversion technologies. Furthermore, the professor is expected to develop strong ties to relevant industrial partners to foster innovations within the field of research.
You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels. You will develop teaching activities to support DTU’s ambition about having Europe’s best engineering education.
DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
The professor must be an internationally acknowledged expert in the research field sustainable thermal power generating technologies and have significant teaching experience at university levels from BSc level to PhD level. The successful candidate must be an experienced self-driven scientist with a keen eye for new developments in the field of thermal sciences.
The professor must have a proven track record within some of the following research fields:
- Design, fluid selection and optimization of power cycles, e.g., organic Rankine cycle systems.
- Design, optimization, and experimental analysis of heat transfer equipment.
- Use of sustainable energy sources for power generation.
- Design and optimization of turbomachinery.
- Transient analysis and control of cycles and boilers.
- Techno-economic optimization of power generation systems.
- Thermal storage for power applications
Candidates for the professorship must demonstrate remarkable achievements in terms of:
- A high international level of research production, which has contributed to the advancement of the research field.
- A proven track record in attracting and managing research projects
Furthermore, the successful candidate is highly self-motivated and ready to take on new and challenging tasks. You are dedicated to developing talent and motivated to contribute to a dynamic environment where research and education at the highest international level are cornerstones.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
