Professor in social science drug and alcohol research

Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research (CRF), Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Aarhus University invites applications for the position as Professor in the field of social science drug and alcohol research. The professorship is a full-time and permanent position starting on 1 October, 2023 or as soon as possible subject to mutual agreement.


Job description

The announced professorship is a permanent position with research and teaching obligations within the specified fields outlined above. The successful candidate is expected to take on responsibility for research leadership with regards to developing the dedicated field, attracting external funding to the field from both national and international councils, as well as being a committed ambassador for the Centre. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to participate in the Centre’s day-to-day activities (lecturing, seminars, workshops, etc.), undertake teaching and supervision of students at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level, as well as participating in administrative and organizational tasks.

The applicant should contribute to strengthening the Centre’s international research profile and research collaboration in the field of alcohol and drug research. Furthermore, it is required that the successful candidate engage in disseminating drug and alcohol research within Denmark to practitioners, politicians and the general population. The position also involves performing administrative tasks. Finally, it is required that the successful applicant will attend the Centre on a daily basis and participate actively in the Centre’s interdisciplinary research environment.


Your qualifications

Applicants should have a strong academic background as associate professor or equivalent and must be able to demonstrate to have made significant contributions to developments in the field. Qualifications must be well documented including a significant number of published contributions in international journals as well as having a strong record of research funding. The applicant should also have extensive experience managing research projects as well as exhibiting a track record of working within interdisciplinary research teams. Moreover, the candidate should support evidence of the different avenues that he/she has used to disseminate research. Finally, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team is important. In addition, management skills as well as strong teaching qualifications would be important. Applicants with well documented research experience within the field of drug and alcohol research will be preferred. Non-Danish speaking candidates are required to acquire the necessary language skills within a short period of time (max 2 years).

Permanent employment as Professor at Aarhus BSS requires completion of the supervision course and also the course Blended Learning – Go Online provided by Centre for Teaching and Learning at Aarhus BSS. If you have not completed the courses before commencement of employment, continued employment will be conditional on completion of the courses within a five year period.


Who we are

At the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research we carry out social-science research in the alcohol and drug field. Our research projects focus on treatment, prevention, policy and recreational consumption and involve both legal and illegal drugs. The Centre is interdisciplinary and currently the employees have backgrounds in anthropology, psychology, sociology, law and public health, among other social science disciplines. Our tasks involve establishing and conducting research projects, teaching, communicate knowledge about alcohol and drug issues and collaborating with other national players in the area as well as with scholars at other international research institutions.
