Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Aarhus University offers a postdoc position starting on 1 March 2024 or soon thereafter. The position is a fixed-term position for 15 months.
The qualified candidate will become an essential member of a multidisciplinary team of international scientists based at the Group of Brain Development and Disease at the University of Copenhagen. The research group was established in 2017 and has a main research focus on the entorhinal cortex and its role in development, evolution, and Alzheimer’s disease. The teams’ strengths lie in stem cell biology, electrophysiology and single cell technologies.
This position is part of a Novo Nordisk Foundation Interdisciplinary Synergy grant. The overall research aim of the project is to produce a novel multiomic technology that combines spatial transcriptomics with electrophysiology for use in the neurosciences and includes collaborators from Harvard University/Brigham Women’s hospital and De Lille University, France.
The position entails profiling the entorhinal cortex (region of the brain) in mice using standard and novel multielectrode arrays and performing to a lesser extent, the spatial transcriptomics method, Merfish. This technique will be compared with a newly developed procedure in our lab, patch-seq, on the mouse entorhinal cortex. The applicant will also be expected to contribute to some elements of the patch-seq procedure.
The position involves a short stay at Harvard University, US, with a collaborating group to learn and perform Merfish.
The postdoc will:
- Perform mouse brain slice cultures and culture them in multielectrode arrays (MEAs).
- Establish novel methods for culturing murine brain slices in MEAs
- Perform brain slice cultures in novel MEAS produced in the NNF grant by collaborators.
- Fly to Boston, US, to perform merfish on SpaiCon arrays.
- Assist patch-seq experiments on mouse brain slices together with an employed postdoc.
The postdoc will perform all activities at the laboratory facilities at University of Copenhagen, where other researchers in the project are employed.
Qualifications for a postdoc position
- Academic qualifications at PhD level in Neuroscience, Neurophysiology, Molecular Biomedicine or similar.
- Research experience in using multielectrode arrays
- Research experience in neuronal cell cultures.
- Research experience in working with and handling of mice.
- Knowledge and or experience in molecular biology techniques.
- Knowledge and or experience in single cell RNA sequencing and basic bioinformatics.
- Significant skills in data analyses of multielectrode array data
- Significant skills in scientific communication of research results
- The candidate must have excellent collaborative and English communication skills.
- The candidate must hold at least FELASA B certification (or equivalent animal experimentation course certification)
- Desirable experience and/or knowledge in spatial transcriptomic technologies
The project will contribute to the development of a new multiomic technology for the neurosciences which combines multielectrode arrays with spatial transcriptomics. The candidate will participate in knowledge exchange with society and industry.
Further information on the position may be obtained from Professor Vanessa Jane Hall from the research unit (Gut and host health ), ph.. +45 35332512, email: [email protected]
Place of work and area of employment
The place of work is mainly at the laboratory facilities at Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and the area of employment is Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Blichers Allé 20, 8830 Tjele, AU Viborg, Aarhus University (AU) with related departments.
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.
