Postdoc in User Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 09 Oct 2022

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a postdoc position in User Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Department of Strategy and Innovation. Expected starting date is as soon as possible and preferably before 1 January 2023.

The Department of Strategy and Innovation has an emphasis on Strategy and Innovation - as indicated by the name - but there is equal emphasis on Entrepreneurship and International Business. The four areas are the pillars that the department is resting on in its teaching and research activities. The number of staff in the department is approximately 80. This includes about 45 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrative staff members, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.

The department’s ambition is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching in strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas is eclectic, combining strategy and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. Methodologically, the department places considerable emphasis on the solid application of empirical methods, featuring qualitative interview studies, surveys, register data, or experiments.

The teaching of the department is very diverse across programs and areas and largely falls within the four research areas of the department, i.e. strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business.

The aim of the project is to better understand and promote entrepreneurial and commercialization initiatives related to user innovation in healthcare, as well as its diffusion. Patient innovation refers to the development of new medical products/devices and services by patients and informal caregivers, for themselves, to help them cope with their own medical conditions. The project is closely connected to the research activities of the Patient Innovation initiative and is organized in two pillars, each focusing on complementary forms of diffusion: 1) new firm creation or 2) commercialization by established medtech firms.

The work will build upon the Patient Innovation (PI) platform (https://patient-innovation.com ) and its portfolio of health-tech products and solutions developed by patients or caregivers for themselves, to help them cope with a health condition. PI is a non-profit association & online platform dedicated to facilitating the sharing of innovative solutions developed by patients/caregivers to help them cope with their diseases.

The PI platform facilitates the sharing of patient innovations, enabling ideation, experimentation, and validation of solutions. Through such activities, PI empowers the community of patients to innovate along with incumbents, connecting them to the resources and networks required to commercialize promising solutions.

The previous efforts regarding patient/caregiver innovation at CBS has been concerned with the identification of innovations. In contrast, this project explores different paths for diffusion and is organized in two pillars:

1) the creation and acceleration of new firms by patients/caregivers and

2) the matching of the patient innovations/innovators with established firms, with the goal of bringing those patient-developed innovations to market.

We will investigate the opportunities for firms to commercialize patient innovations. We will address questions related with both pillars: e.g. What is the typical process of development and diffusion of innovations developed by patients or caregivers? What is the role of multi-sided platforms in facilitating the diffusion? To what extent is willingness-to-pay for products developed by patients higher than for products by producers? How do “opportunity costs” impact the decision of patient innovators to become entrepreneurs vis-à-vis the possibility of working with firms? What are the ethical concerns to be considered? In what ways do firms profit from working with patient/caregiver innovators?

The analysis will mostly rely on empirical methods, namely on the analysis of data collected by the PI platform.

The ideal candidate for the position will be a recent PhD graduate with a deep interest in this domain who can provide research support in terms of literature reviews, analyses, etc.. Strong technical skills in empirical analysis, in addition to thorough training in the relevant research literature (strategy and entrepreneurship), are desirable.

The postdoc position is time-limited to 1,5 years (100% research). If the successful applicants wish to teach, some teaching opportunities can be explored within the department (this can extend the overall duration of the contract).

The post-doc will work closely with Profs Pedro Oliveira and José Mata, who will supervise the research.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have completed a PhD in Management, Economics, or other related social science disciplines before the beginning of the fellowship. Prior work (including but not limited to dissertation) in innovation management is a plus.
  • Excellent academic record and work ethic required.
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills are required.
  • Enthusiasm for research required. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to build skills towards taking on a research career in the future.
  • Willingness to move to and live in Denmark.

For further information about the research projects, please contact Prof. Pedro Oliveira ([email protected] ) or Prof. José Mata ([email protected] ). Information about the department is available at www.cbs.dk/si
