Postdoc in the Sociology of Transformative Technology at the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy, CBS

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant Postdoc in the sociology of transformative technology at the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy (MPP).  

The Postdoc position is a three year fixed-term position with both research and teaching obligations. The expected start date is 1 January 2023.

About MPP
MPP is a unique business humanities department central to the CBS Strategy of transforming society with business. MPP is a multi-disciplinary research department with the ambition to make our research in management and organization studies at an internationally qualified level known to students, companies, public institutions, and research colleagues as innovative, creative and critical/reflexive. A creative, multi-disciplinary dialogue that challenges and combines academic disciplines and perspectives ties research at the department together. This implies that core areas like management, strategy, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, aesthetics, politics, philosophy, sociology and history, become productive and critically relevant in new ways. The department is committed to research-based education and to bring this new knowledge into play in society in a constructive, engaged, and valuable manner. A key focus of MPP is to publish its research with highly ranked academic journals and publishers across a broad spectrum of areas, reflecting the department’s multidisciplinary set-up.

MPP is organised into five research groups: politics; law; business history; philosophy and management & entrepreneurship. Within and between these groups, research and teaching is developed theoretically and empirically in areas such as leadership philosophy; business ethics; business law; sociology of markets and organization; sustainability; the history of markets and businesses; organizations and entrepreneurship; art and aesthetics; strategy; welfare management and political communication. MPP also participates in numerous interdisciplinary cross CBS activities.  

Across the department, there is a keen interest in developing new forms of teaching and learning environments in collaboration with CBS faculty, international researchers, students and partner organizations. MPP’s researchers teach in a wide range of CBS programs and covers Bachelor, Master and PhD levels as well as executive programs. 

To fulfil the research requirements of the position, the applicant chosen is expected to be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department.

Profile of the position  

The ideal applicant should have interest, skills, and experience in

  • Employing sociological theories and methods to study the implications of transformative technologies in organizations, markets, and the economy.
  • Engaging in cross-disciplinary discussions related to transformative technologies and publishing research in academic outlets across disciplines using various research methods.
  • Development and teaching of new courses on using quantitative, qualitative, and computational methods for research in transformative technologies and strategic design.
  • Research collaboration in a multidisciplinary team with diverse academic backgrounds and multi-method approaches.

To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the applicant chosen is expected to be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department.

​The Postdoc is expected to contribute to the development and application of the research of the department’s research areas and to maintain and strengthen CBS’s international research position. 

Responsibilities 

  • Teaching and associated examination in existing CBS programs, including Executive Education 
  • Individual and group based research meeting high international standards
  • Promoting CBS’s academic reputation
  • Initiating, fund raising and coordinating research projects
  • Promoting the teaching and research capabilities of CBS and other relevant assignments at CBS
  • Contributing to the administrative responsibilities of the Department and to CBS-wide tasks
  • Communicating findings to the public in general and to CBS’s stakeholders in particular, including participating in the public debate.
  • Research meeting high international standards, including responsibility for the academic development of the relevant discipline
  • Responsibility for publishing, scientific communication and research-based teaching
  • Active participation in the regular research activities, such as research seminars, workshops and conferences.

Qualifications
The ideal applicant must have a background in fields such as science and technology studies, economic sociology/social studies of finance, and organizational sociology and have research and teaching experience in multi-method work (interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, statistical analysis, computational analysis, etc.).

The applicant must:

  • Hold a PhD or the equivalent. Doctoral candidates who are yet to submit but will complete soon must have a supporting letter of reference from their primary doctoral advisor.
  • Demonstrate high theoretical and methodological competences.
  • Show teaching competences that enable the students to learn analytic and method skills.
  • Demonstrate professional proficiency in English.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.

  • A brief (1-page) research statement explaining research plans for the 3 year postdoc period, and possibly beyond.
  • Recruitment procedure  

    The Recruitment Committee will shortlist minimum two applicants; when possible five or more applicants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted applicants will be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline. 

    The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.

    Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
