Satisfying the demand for renewable, environmentally friendly energy is one of the urgent grand challenges. Photovoltaics (PV) is definitely one of the answers to this challenge. Since the efficiency of single material PV cells is approaching fundamental limits a major challenge in photovoltaics today is to improve efficiency in order to reduce the levelized cost of electricity below that of fossil fuels. Fortunately, in tandem solar cells far higher efficiency is possible, and this Postdoc project is part of a larger effort at DTU Nanotech and DTU Fotonik, which aims at developing the necessary technology to realize the potential for enhanced efficiency by integrating a Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cell on top of a Silicon solar cell.

Responsibilities and tasks
The ultimate goal of the overall project is to develop technology for a CZTS-Silicon tandem solar cell. This entails an improvement of CZTS single cell technology to enhance the efficiency, development of a suitable silicon bottom cell, and solving issues related to integration of the two cells.

This Postdoc project will be mostly involved in the CZTS technology, with the following goals:

  • Establishing a robust baseline process for CZTS synthesis (by sputter deposition followed by annealing), as well as for the complete CZTS single cell
  • Characterizing CZTS films and solar cell devices and understanding their limitations
  • Studying and solving integration issues of CZTS with the bottom silicon cell, i.e., development of a tunnel junction and protection against diffusion of metals from CZTS into silicon

The Postdoc is expected to take a leading role in these activities.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Further qualifications:
The candidate is expected to have

  • Past experience with solar cell technology
  • Past experience with characterization of thin film materials and solar cells
  • Past experience with synthesis of thin films.

Previous experience with CZTS or CIGS technology is an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The work will be carried out primarily at DTU Nanotech and with some activities at DTU Fotonik at Risø.

The position is for three years.
