A 3-year postdoc position is available at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging (CFU), DTU Health Tech from March 1, 2022 sponsored by the European Research Council (ERC). It is conducted in collaboration between CFU and the MEMS group at DTU Health Tech, the University of Copenhagen, and the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in the ERC Synergy Grant “3-D Super resolution Ultrasound Real time imaging of Erythrocytes” - SURE.
The SURE project develops and researches a new super resolution ultrasound imaging method capable of resolving 3-D capillary flow in the human body. The approach tracks the motion of the individual red blood cells (erythrocytes) in a three-dimensional volume for a full visualization of anatomy, flow, and perfusion. The approach can potentially yield a paradigm shift in the scientific study, diagnoses, and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and vascular diseases at the capillary level, as it enables the possibility of volumetrically visualizing capillary perfusion in real-time at frame rates above 20 Hz without injection of contrast agents.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
The principle responsibility of the postdoc is to develop the processing pipeline for SRI and SURE imaging in 3-D for row-column matrix arrays and optimizing the quantitative data from the pipeline for both phantom, animal, and human data. Animal experiments are made with medical doctors at the University of Copenhagen, and the clinical studies are conducted in collaboration with Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.
The research is conducted in a truly multi-disciplinary environment consisting of the 4 academic partners specializing in advanced ultrasound imaging, silicon CMUT probes, animal experiments, and clinical investigations, and the main purpose is to translate the SURE method from a research idea to the clinic.
The main task is to optimize the processing pipeline based on the previous work at CFU on synthetic aperture imaging data from row-column matrix arrays and to make target isolation and motion estimation in 3-D for high resolution motion correction and blood velocity estimation. This is integrated in our SURE processing framework and tested on 3D printed soft-tissue phantoms. The scheme is then implemented on our research scanners for pre-clinical trials and validation at the University of Copenhagen using GPU processing. The implementation will finally be clinically evaluated in human trials conducted together with the Department of Radiology at Rigshospitalet to reveal its efficacy.
Candidates should have a PhD degree electrical or biomedical engineering, computer science or a similar degree. The candidate must have the following qualifications:

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
