Postdoc in Strategy and Maritime Digitalization

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 11 Nov 2022

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a postdoc position in Strategy and Maritime Digitalization at the Department of Strategy and Innovation. Expected starting date is as soon as possible and preferably before 1 January 2023.

The Department of Strategy and Innovation has an emphasis on Strategy and Innovation - as indicated by the name - but there is equal emphasis on Entrepreneurship and International Business. The four areas are the pillars that the department is resting on in its teaching and research activities. The number of staff in the department is approximately 90. This includes about 45 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrative staff members, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.

The department’s ambition is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching in strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas is eclectic, combining strategy and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. Methodologically, the department places considerable emphasis on the solid application of empirical methods, featuring qualitative interview studies, surveys, register data, or experiments.

The teaching of the department is very diverse across programs and areas and largely falls within the four research areas of the department, i.e. strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business.

The aim of the project is to analyse maritime digitalization regarded from a strategic and commercial perspective. Digitalization concerns the transfer of information in bits rather than through traditional analogue technologies. It follows that the economic relevance of digitalization as a research field concerns the shifts in costs, meaning that costs of information search, replication, transportation, tracking and verification have decreased and in some cases even reached zero (Goldfarb & Tucker, 2019). The project is closely connected to existing research in maritime digitalization. Rather than focusing on maritime applications of specific new digital technologies such as AI, IoT or big data this project is built upon the fundamental assumption that digitalization can be understood as a force of integration (not to be regarded as centralization) powered by shifts in costs. We will investigate how business strategies in the maritime sector have been altered through the digital driven integration in four dimensions:

  • Technological integration between sea and shore: how HQs and vessels are integrating due to digital systems such as route planning, IoT, digital twins etc. This integration makes it possible to optimize operations and thus also enhance the green transition of the industry, but the integration also raises new challenges concerning seafarers welfare, safety etc.
  • Commercial integration between company and customer: how shipping companies are getting closer to customers through digital systems which makes it possible to co-create value proposition in close information loops with customers, who in the B2B segments often gradually becomes business partners rather than commercial customers.
  • Institutional integration between public and private spheres: how stakeholders in international shipping are getting closer to each other due to digital systems which makes it possible for public institutions at the global, regional, national and local level constantly to monitor and communicate with private actors.
  • Organizational integration between past experiences and present decision: how the collection and processing of big data makes it possible to integrate past experiences with present decisions and thus qualify commercial, technological, political and organization decision-taking processes.
  • The analysis will mostly rely on empirical methods, including the analysis of specific cases relevant to each of the four integration dimensions. The research will consist of a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods.

The ideal candidate for the position will be a recent PhD graduate with a deep knowledge on maritime economics. As the green transition is regarded as pivotal to maritime digitalization and the four dimensions it would be relevant with a candidate who have a specific knowledge on the assessment and evaluation of externalities from shipping. It is very important that the candidate possess a deep knowledge on the fundamentals in maritime studies including externalities from shipping and maritime related policies.

The postdoc position is limited to three (3) years (66% research), and the successful candidate should ideally possess teaching experiences for instance as teaching assistant at both undergraduate and graduate level in maritime studies.

The postdoc will work closely with Associate Professor Martin Jes Iversen, who will supervise the research.

    Qualifications:

    • Applicants must have completed a PhD in Economics, or other related social science disciplines before the beginning of the fellowship.
    • Excellent academic record and work ethic required.
    • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills are required.
    • Teaching experience at university level will be an advantage.
    • Enthusiasm for research required. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to build skills towards taking on a research career in the future.
    • Willingness to move to and live in Denmark.
