At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology One or more positions as postdoc in Rehabilitation Robotics: Robot Control for Assistive Robotic Manipulators Based on Tongue Motions (the H2020 Eurostars iTooBot project) is open from June 1st 2021 or soon hereafter and to August 31st 2023.
Aalborg University (AAU) is a leading University in Denmark within rehabilitation robotics and rated as the best university in Europe within Engineering.
This job advertisement considers a postdoc position, in which the focus will be on developing a stand alone device allowing for tongue control of an assistive robotic manipulator for severely paralyzed individuals. It is an innovative EU project (H2020 Eurostars) where Aalborg University collaborates with a company in Denmark and a company in the Netherlands.
The position will be based at the Department of Health Science and Technology (HST), which carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within rehabilitation robotics, biomedical engineering, sports science, and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1200 students. More than 160 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for 3D movement analysis, robotics, tongue computer interfacing, myoelectric control and sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programmes at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning organized around cases and projects. For more, see: www.hst.aau.dk .
Translational research in rehabilitation engineering and robotics is the focus of the research group Neurorehabilitation Robotics and Engineering at HST, which is the research group that the postdoc will be related to. This group focuses on novel state of the art robotic solutions including robot interfacing, exoskeletons and assistive robotic arms. The group develops and improves neurorehabilitation robots and interfaces and perform studies of these in human experimental and clinical settings:
The related lab includes several commercial and research based robots e.g. the EXOTIC exoskeleton, the CarbonHand and the JACO and soon the iARM, and in addition technologies to measure tongue movements, EEG and EMG. Further, there are equipment to facilitate AI/semi-automation of robotics devices through e.g. vision and for the application of functional electrical stimulation in conjunction with e.g. wearable robots. Below there are links to the Lab and updates from the group.
Updates on current activities can be found at:
The successful applicant will collaborate closely with the rest of the group who are working within the same laboratories. In addition, there will be a close collaboration with the two project participating companies and with clinical partners at Aalborg University Hospital and at rehabilitation centers. The successful applicant will focus on the mapping of tongue interfaces for control and development of an assistive robotic arm in relation to the rehabilitation of severely disabled individuals. The research will include development of tongue robotic mapping and control schemes (software and hardware) and the integration of the tongue interface, the tongue robot mapping device and the robot. Further, the research include experimental studies involving both healthy people and individuals with severe sensory and/or motor disabilities. The research is innovative and there will be developed a stand-alone interface between the tongue interface and the robot. The successful candidate for the postdoc holds a master degree in biomedical engineering, robotics or mechatronics with the prospect of pursuing innovative studies in rehabilitation robotics. Further, the candidate must have finalized or nearly finalized a PhD study, preferably in the field of rehabilitation robotics and/or robotic interfacing and control. In addition, experience with clinical and/or human experimentation is highly prioritized.
A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. Good dissemination skills are important.
Teaching experience will be considered as an asset.
You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Lotte N. S. Andreasen Struijk, e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org concerning the scientific aspects of the position.
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
The application must contain the following:
- A motivated text wherein the reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position are stated.
- A current curriculum vitae.
- Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
- Scientific qualifications. A complete list of publications must be attached with an indication of the works the applicant wishes to be considered. You may attach up to 5 publications.
- Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
- Additional qualifications in relation to the position. References/recommendations.
- Personal data.
The applications are only to be submitted online by using the "Apply online" button below. An assessment committee will assess all candidates.
AAU wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background or belief.
