Postdoc in Human Energy Expenditure in Transport Behaviour Modelling – DTU Management

We are seeking an ambitious candidate to join our research team as a Postdoctoral researcher. You will play a key role in a cutting-edge research project, “Human energy expenditure in mobility”, focused on understanding and modelling cycling behaviour with a unique emphasis on human energy considerations. As part of your role, you will be responsible for developing choice models to describe how energy expenditure influences behaviour. 

Human energy expenditure is a fundamental characteristic of cycling – cyclists mustspend energy pedalling to make the bicycle move. Very little research has however been put into developing network and behavioural models that take the unique aspects of human energy expenditure into account. To address this gap, the research project will formulate a novel modelling paradigm that directly incorporates energy considerations into the modelling framework. This will involve the development of a network model to describe individual-specific energy usage and corresponding route choice models to capture cyclist behaviour. We will utilise these new insights in various ways to explore the potential to improve public health and increase active mobility.

The project is a Sapere Aude project, which is an excellence grant funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. In addition to you, the research team will consist of another postdoc, a PhD student, and senior experts from DTU and abroad. The other postdoc will have primary focus on developing a network model to describe energy usage (see advertisement: Postdoc in Human Energy Expenditure in Mobility ).

Responsibilities and qualifications
The research team will be working closely together, and you will be our expert in the development of choice models that describe the impact of energy expenditure on behaviour. 

Your primary tasks will be to: 

  • Process and analyse large-scale datasets related to cycling behaviour.
  • Develop choice models to provide new insights into the influence of energy expenditure on traveller behaviour. 
  • Integrate measures of energy into state-of-the-art route choice models and apply these to large-scale cases.
  • Engage in scenario exploration and conduct analyses to explore and demonstrate the novel capabilities of the developed models.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present results at conferences.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in transport, economics, mathematics, data science, or a related discipline. You should have experience with choice modelling, and good knowledge of statistical modelling and data analysis. Strong programming skills are also an advantage (e.g., Python).

Furthermore, you have demonstrated the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a research team.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The period of employment is 2 years. The starting date is 1 March 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the department
You will be working in the Transportation Systems Modelling section belonging to the Transportation Science division of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) at DTU. The division conducts research and teaching in the field of traffic and transport planning, with particular focus on behaviour modelling, machine learning and simulation. 

DTU Management conducts high-level research and teaching with a focus on sustainability, transport, innovation, and management science. Our goal is to create knowledge on the societal aspects of technology - including the interaction between technology and sustainability, business growth, infrastructure, and prosperity. Therefore, we explore and create value in the areas of management science, innovation and design thinking, business analytics, systems and risk analyses, human behaviour, regulation and policy analysis.
