Point defects in wide band gap semiconductors are promising candidates for room temperature spin qubits, single photon generators, and for magnetic field sensors that could enable measurement of the tiny magnetic fields created by individual neurons in the brain.
The section for Computational Atomic-scale Materials Design (CAMD) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated post doc within the area of electronic structure calculations of point defects for quantum technologies. The project is supervised by Prof. Kristian Thygesen and is part of the recently established Novo Nordisk challenge program BIO-MAG. The BIO-MAG program is a collaboration between 4 partners, combining world-class expertise in theoretical materials design, material synthesis, material processing, electronic and optical material characterization and application in neuro-science.
Today, quantum computing, the generation of entangled photons for quantum communication, and measurements of magnetic fields from the brain require cryogenic temperatures. Research efforts into alternative methods that can operate at higher temperatures (ideally room temperature) are therefore a top priority for the fields of neurobiology and quantum technology.
As a postdoc at CAMD within the BIO-MAG program, you will discover novel quantum defects in crystalline solid-state materials and explore their properties for emerging quantum technologies, specifically spin qubits with long coherence times, single photon emitters with narrow luminescence spectra, and the detection of magnetic fields at the nano-scale. You will work in an international and stimulating environment of other PhD students and postdocs, employing state of the art computational methods and codes developed within the group.
CAMD offers an international and scientifically stimulating working environment at the Department of Physics, DTU, located in the northern Copenhagen area. The section develops the GPAW electronic structure code, the Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE) as well as other open source software projects and databases. Substantial computational resources are available for the project through the DTU-supercomputer facility Niflheim .
You have a PhD degree or equivalent in theoretical/computational physics or chemistry. You have a strong background in solid state physics and electronic structure theory and basic knowledge of machine learning. You have good programming skills and knowledge Python. Finally, you have excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The work must be carried out at DTU. The period of employment is for two years. The position is available from February 1, 2024.
