Copenhagen Business School, Department of Organization, invites applications for a vacant Postdoc/Assistant Professor position in the field of Organization Theory and Impact. The position has a duration of three years (including 6 months teaching responsibility). The anticipated starting date is January 1, 2024, or sooner.
The position is part of a collaborative research project entitled “The Impact of Big Funding on the Outcomes and Institutionalized Form of the University” (details available upon request), which is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and led by Principal Investigator Associate Professor Jane Bjørn Vedel. The Asssitant Professor will become part of an existing research team consisting of two postdocs and one PhD. The team conducts research on how changes in field-level financial structures – e.g., amounts, time horizons, and recipients of funding – impact organizational form. The team studies this question in the context of higher education and in relation to large-scale research grants.
The candidate for this position should have expertise in organization theory and experience with publication in high-impact journals within general management and organization studies. Relevant areas of expertise include institutional theory, work and professions, and organization and time, and interest in organizational processes related to innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology is considered an advantage. The candidate should have significant expertise in and experience with qualitative research designs and methods, including interview-based studies, ethnographies, and archival data analysis. The position involves extensive qualitative research in Denmark, Australia, and the Netherlands, and a willingness to reside in the Copenhagen area for the main part of the scholarship. The position entails close collaboration with the PI and the research team in an integrated team structure, hosted within the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School.
The Department of Organization (IOA) pursues a problem-oriented, business in society approach to understanding and intervening in organizations and organizational life. Our research is focused upon organizing processes and their outcomes, and motivated by an interest in organization and management as a practical, situated, contested and changing matter. Our approach is interdisciplinary and combines social-scientific traditions such as organization theory, sociology, ethnography, political economy, and social psychology. Methodologically, our research is predominantly qualitative and often involves case study and fieldwork methodology.
Teaching responsibilities of the Department comprise undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as teaching in post-experience and doctoral education.
To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the applicant(s) chosen is expected to be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department. The qualified applicant is obliged to participate in the assistant professor program at CBS on teaching principles and methods in order to fulfill the pedagogical requirements made at the end of the term of employment as assistant professor.
The applicant must hold a PhD or the equivalent. Emphasis is placed on the applicant’s research potential, which means that a researcher with a large research potential may be preferred to a researcher with a large research production.

- Accomplished academic research record.
- Proven application of qualitative methods and advanced social science theory.
- Proven ability to perform research successfully in professional environments.
- Experience with publication of qualitative research in high-impact journals.
- Oral and written proficiency in English.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage research projects.
- Enthusiasm for empirical research and theoretical curiosity.
