Postdoc of climate gases and ecosystem processes of freshwaters and wetlands
Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
Description of the scientific environment
The successful applicant will be based at the Freshwater Biological Section. The section covers: climate gas exchange, carbon dynamics in freshwaters and wetland, biodiversity, ecophysiology, ecosystem dynamics, and alpine-arctic-tropical research. The section comprises research and teaching of staff members, laboratory technicians, Post Docs, PhD candidates and MSc and BSc students. The section has state-of-the-art laboratory and field equipment and experience in conducting extensive field sampling and experiments.
The Post Doc position is part of a grant from Danmarks Frie Forskningsråd (DFF) entitled “Supporting climate and biodiversity by rewetting of low-laying areas” and lead by Professor Kaj Sand-Jensen.
The overall aim of this Post Doc project is to quantify and model greenhouse gas (GHG) - emissions and ecosystem drivers in natural and restored freshwaters and wetlands in order to upscale GHG emissions from regional to national scale. This will be carried out by measuring GHG-emissions from field sites using flux chambers with simultaneous determination of major environmental and ecosystem drivers of GHG-emissions such as hydrology, biodiversity and organic carbon lability. Modeling and upscaling are based on own field measurements and data compilation from existing databases. The two specific questions are: 1. What are the local and national-international magnitude of GHG-emissions from freshwaters, primarily, and wetlands, secondarily, and 2. What are the main environmental and ecosystem drivers of GHG-emissions and carbon sequestration in these systems.
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a Post Doc at SCIENCE are:
- To manage and carry out your research project
- To co-operate with permanent scientific staff and help in guiding PhD-students and MS-Students associated with the main project
- To write scientific articles
- To teach and disseminate your research
- To work for the department
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree, or equivalent, in biology, ecology, or a closely related field. As criteria for assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will be put on scientific publication, relevant work experience and dissemination of your scientific results.
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual with good interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience in quantification of GHG emissions and ecosystem processes in the field and laboratory as well as ecosystem modeling and upscaling of ecosystem processes are required.
Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement.
