Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 25 Nov 2021

Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, is looking for an Associate Professor with expertise in how the transition zone between catchment and aquatic ecosystems contribute to nutrient fluxes and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly with respect to agricultural intensification and economic development in developing countries.

Job description
We are looking for a person who can supplements the Department of Ecoscience research activities within terrestrial-aquatic linkages aimed at understanding the environmental effects of agriculture management systems nationally and internationally in sub-tropical/tropical regions. Research fields includes how human alteration of landscapes, e.g. agricultural intensification, livestock, impoundments and urbanization, affect water quality and greenhouse gas emissions from aquatic ecosystems in developing countries. The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching, ongoing and new national and international projects in the department. The applicant’s scientific background can be from biogeochemistry, aquatic ecology and/or agricultural management.

It is anticipated that scientific emphasis is put on combining experimental and in-situ data with integrated hydrological and biogeochemical modelling that can assess catchment-scale nutrient retention and greenhouse emissions. .

The Department of Ecoscience has an ambition on maintaining existing and initializing new international network with north-south partnerships on nutrient fluxes and GHG emissions in tropical regions. Therefore documented experience, networks and leadership in international projects for research and capacity building in for example tropical Africa will be beneficial.

The work place
The Department of Ecoscience is engaged in research programs, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct excellent research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, Arctic environment and ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation biology. Research areas include, but are not limited to; Human impact on species, the environment and the nutrient cycle; Effects of global climate change on biological, chemical and physical processes in and around the aquatic environment; Assessment of water quality and ecological status; Empirical, dynamic and conceptual modelling; Measures to manage and reduce the loss of carbon, nutrients and pollutants to the aquatic environment.

The activities take place at a national and international level with main activities in Denmark and Northern Europe, including the Arctic, as well as the sub-tropics/tropics.

The successful candidate will be related to The Section of Lake Ecology, working within the fields of ecology, lake restoration, biogeochemistry, GHG emission, developing lake and runoff models to create various future nutrient-, climate- and runoff scenarios for lakes and the derived effects hereof.

What we offer
The position is a full-time position as Associate Professor at Department of Ecoscience at Aarhus University, Vejlsøvej 25 in Silkeborg until summer 2022, where the department will move to Campus at Aarhus University.
