PhD Fellow for the Genome Integrity group at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center (DCRC)

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 05 Nov 2021

The Danish Cancer Society is a democratic association that stands on a solid foundation and with an active position both nationally and internationally. The association provides help and advice to cancer patients and their families as well as excellent research and education at a high level. The Danish Cancer Society has its own Research Center, which consists of 23 independent research groups with approx. 200 researchers from more than 20 different countries.

About us

The Genome Integrity group explores the mechanisms of how human cells control their proliferation, and employ an extensive hierarchically organized network of proteins, termed DNA damage response (DDR) to maintain genome integrity, thereby directing the cell fate towards cell survival, senescence or cell death after exposure to genotoxic insults such as chemotherapeutic drugs or radiation. We focus on the control of the DNA damage response, the cell cycle regulation and the links of these pathways with cancer. https://www.cancer.dk/research/dcrc-research/genome-integrity/

About the position

The successful candidate will carry out projects focused on the characterization of DNA replication stress mechanisms, their relevance for cancer, and the identification of novel protein regulators of the cellular response to genotoxic stress. The work will combine the use of high content microscopy, genomic analysis, and standard techniques of immunochemistry, cell and molecular biology.

About you

We are looking for a highly driven, motivated and enthusiastic candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in computer sciences, molecular biology, biochemistry, or biophysics
  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques is an advantage
  • Experience in microscopy techniques is an advantage
  • Familiarity with programming and coding is an advantage but it is not a prerequisite
  • Good communication skills in English

We offer

We offer work on exciting projects in the international, dynamic scientific community at the DCRC and access to state-of-the-art equipment available at our Research Center, such as high content imaging, confocal and high-resolution microscopes, sequencing platforms, Seahorse metabolic analyzer, etc. We have weekly lab meetings, frequently invited international speakers, and regular interactions with the scientific community at Copenhagen University. For all employees, the DCRC offers a health-conscious canteen, fresh fruits, and access to sports activities, including an in-house gym. The working hours are of course smoke-free.

Terms of employment

The PhD Fellowship is a three-year contract. It requires enrolment at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. University fees will be covered by the Danish Cancer Society.

One in three Danes will at some point in their life be affected by cancer. Two out of three will become relatives. With so many people involved, the Danish Cancer Society wishes to bring people together in a strong and active community against cancer, where you as an employee can be part in making an important difference. The Danish Cancer Society is a democratic organisation, where local associations and volunteers contribute to reaching our goals of fewer people getting cancer, more surviving cancer and everyone getting the best possible life with and after cancer
