Mechanical Engineer for the design and construction of Ice core drilling equipment

The Center for Ice and Climate at Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen, seeks an experienced mechanical engineer to develop and operate research equipment as part of the EastGRIP ice core project on the Greenlandic ice sheet with effect from 1 April 2023.

About us
The Center for Ice and Climate is a research group which is part of the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. The main activities are ice core drilling and analysis of ice cores with the aim at mapping climate changes in the past to improve our understanding of the mechanisms driving present and future climate changes.

The EastGRIP camp is located in an area of the ice sheet which moves relatively fast and we are investigating the dynamics behind ice flow. The camp consists of up to 35 researchers, engineers, technicians and other staff and is in operation from May to August.

Tasks
You will be part of a team which aims to drill 2550 meters through the ice sheet all the way to the bedrock. The work includes development, design, documentation and operation of ice core drills and the technical equipment- including field gear, measurement setups and laboratory equipment for the Center for Ice and Climate in close collaboration with our drillers group and the NBI workshops.

The job requires you participate in field trips to Greenland for around 2 months every summer.

We expect
We are looking for applicants with experience in ice core drilling and with a background as an engineer in mechanics. You must be a self-starter and able to manage the technical aspects of a drilling project.

Applicants must:

  • have a degree in mechanical engineering or similar
  • be experienced in 3D CAD design
  • have experience with prototyping
  • have experience with using subcontractors
  • have good collaboration skills
  • have a strong drive and an ability to complete tasks on time
  • be fluent in English, oral and written
  • be able to pass a medical similar as the one required for airplane staff.

This is obligatory to be able to work in remote camps on the ice sheet.

Terms of employment
The employment and salary are made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

Employment will be as academic officer/academic employee. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.
