Laboratory academic technical staff position at Niels Bohr Institute Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth

The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering the position as an academic technical staff at Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) commencing May 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a time limited position in the frame of the ERC Synergy Grant ‘Green2Ice’ (When was Greenland ‘green’? – Perspectives from basal ice and sediments from icecores).

About us

Research in this project is focusing on the information that is stored in the deepest layers of ice cores drilled through the Greenlandic ice sheet. The major task is dating of the ice by Ar/Ar dating of the gas trapped in the ice cores but extends to any analysis on entrapped gases and impurities that is helping to interpret the samples.

The applicant will be part of the laboratory team consisting of senior researchers, PhD candidates, and master and bachelor students working in a stimulating and interactive international environment.

Tasks

The key tasks as a laboratory technician are:

  • Installation and testing of a new high-resolution isotope ratio mass spectrometer
  • Establish methods for Ar/Ar dating
  • Establish methods for other gas components trapped in the ice, i.e. clumped isotopes
  • Measure and analyse ice core samples and potentially samples from other environmental archives relevant to Green2Ice
  • Guidance/supervision of students on the Master and PhD level
  • Support researchers in outreach and publishing results
  • Contribute to the analysis of high purity water samples by means of existing (Ion Chromatograph and absorption/fluorescence techniques) and potential new measurement techniques

We expect

In-depth experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Knowledge of ice core research, i.e. gas analyses is an advantage. Experience with chemical analysis of environmental water samples for soluble and insoluble impurities at low concentrations (ppt, ppb) e.g. by means of IC or ICP-MS is a further advantage. We envision a background in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences or related fields at MSc or PhD level.

Terms of salary and employment

The position is available for 2-year extendable to 6 years in total.

The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The employment will be as academic employee. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time is 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.
