Copenhagen Business School invites qualified candidates to apply for the position as Head of the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy (MPP).

This offers a unique opportunity to lead a dynamic multi-disciplinary department in the humanities and social sciences. The department is organized into the following research groups: political management, business history, management philosophy, management & entrepreneurship, and law. The group leaders are part of the department’s leadership group headed by the Head of Department.

The department expanded in 2018 with the addition of CBS LAW, the Civil Society Group, and the Center for Leisure and Culture Services. MPP is now among the largest departments at CBS with more than 100 scientific staff members.


The responsibilities as Head of Department include:

  • Facilitating the provision of research, education and dissemination of the highest quality within the areas of MPP
  • Developing and implementing the MPP’s strategy as a part of CBS overall strategy
  • Ensuring the maintenance and development of individual research profiles of each of the MPP research groups
  • Maintaining a well-run department, including financial performance, administration, and collaboration with other units at CBS
  • Ensuring a highly qualified staff of researchers, lecturers, and administrators through focused recruitment and talent development
  • Contributing actively to ensuring diversity among staff as well as a positive research environment and work climate
  • Strengthening the external funding base to support research activities.
  • Contributing to MPP’s and CBS’ national/international recognition and value-creation for society
  • Contributing to a collaborative and collegial environment among the 11 Heads of Department and Senior Management at CBS
  • Be an integrative force regarding the recent mergers and the successful development of the new MPP

Experience and professional profile

Special emphasis will be given to the following qualifications:

  • Being an internationally recognized scholar in the social sciences or humanities at least at the level of associate professor
  • Management/leadership experience from a research and educational institution
  • Personal integrity and ability to handle and develop a complex organization
  • Ability to inspire and motivate staff, colleagues and partners for teamwork and collaboration
  • Fluency in English and being prepared to learn Danish

The heads of department at CBS are part of the management group with reference to the Dean of Research.

Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy

MPP aims to develop a reputation as being innovative, creative and critical/reflexive among students, companies, public institutions, and research colleagues. The department is committed to research-based education and to add knowledge to society in a constructive, engaged, and valuable manner. A key focus of MPP is to publish its research with leading academic journals and publishers across a broad spectrum of areas, reflecting the department’s multidisciplinary set-up.

Faculty members within our research groups have backgrounds in law, political science, sociology, philosophy, history, anthropology, literature, theology, tourism and leisure management, economics and other areas. What unites MPP is an overriding concern for the human within its multiple environments: work, nature, economy, civil association, the state, and the corporation. MPP also participates in numerous interdisciplinary CBS activities.

Across the department, there is a keen interest in developing new forms of teaching and learning environments in collaboration with CBS faculty, international researchers, students and partner organizations. MPP’s researchers teach in a wide range of CBS programs covering Bachelor, Master and PhD levels as well as executive programs.

Terms of appointment

The position as head of department is term-limited with 3-5 years’ tenure depending on prior experience. It is possible to extend the tenure for up to another 3 years. Salary, duration, and terms of appointment are open for negotiation.

The position is filled in accordance with the Danish collective agreement for academics, as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), and in accordance with the Danish University Act and CBS' bylaws.

The appointment committee will evaluate the applications in accordance with the rules and guidelines of CBS in force at any time.
