Full professor in applied environmental economics

Job description
The selected candidate is expected to:

• Develop internationally recognized and successful research within the field of environmental and natural resource economics
• Take a leading role in further development of the externally funded environmental economic research.
• Develop and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration within the department, and bridge with other departments at the university, as well as relevant national and international research communities.
• Take part in advisory activities of relevant regulatory authorities (national and EU) and private organizations, as lead and/or in a team with other researchers
• Take a leading role in talent development within environmental economics by supervising PhD level students and post docs.

Your profile

The position requires excellent skills within the field of applied environmental economics, and experience from integrated economic and natural scientific research. The ideal candidate has a strong record in quantitative economic analyses, and a proven ability to develop and apply different methodological approaches in analyses of environmental economic problems. 

Applicants should have several years of highly productive post-graduate research after completed PhD. A strong publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed journals, and a significant track-record of successful external research funding, are required. Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to have strong international networks and capability of building networks at international and national level. The applicant must have proven extensive international research collaboration (e.g. joint papers and proposals), a demonstrated research leadership, and successful supervision of PhD students is required. Experience in conducting consultancy/advisory projects, and developing and delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching is desirable. 

The successful candidate should have demonstrated an ability to provide inspiration and guidance for colleagues, and be able to demonstrate the potential to be a strong role model for values of equality, diversity and inclusion. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment. The position, therefore, requires a highly motivated scientist who is comfortable working in teams. The candidate is expected to be able to establish a strong extramural funded research program by taking lead in research applications to the EU Horizon program as well as to public and private foundations in Denmark. Currently, Denmark is investing heavily in green transition research. A clear profile of the candidate in this field is therefore expected.

Who we are
The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges across economics, social science, policy analysis, geography, physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 170 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Environmental Social Science and Geography research unit. The unit employs approximately 20 staff, focusing on the interlinkages between the environment and society from economics, political science, sociology, and geography perspectives. The strategic foci of the unit include environmental policy analysis, regulation and economic instruments, understanding of preferences and behavior of economic actors and policy makers, spatial integrated modelling, and valuation of ecosystem services. Within these areas we carry out research, advisory services for policy makers, and some teaching (we don’t have any bachelor or master programs at the department though). The unit has a strong international profile, obtained by leading and participating in many international projects.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
