Development Engineer in Wind Plant Systems Engineering

The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a Software Development Engineering position in the Systems Engineering and Optimization Section (SYS) at DTU Risø Campus.DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector.

DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best design, operation and control of wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modeling of wind flow, aerodynamics, structures, controls, and more at varying levels of fidelity. The SYS section focuses on modelling, analysis and optimal design of system engineering solutions for complex systems in wind energy with particular focus on the interplay between wind farm flow, dynamics and control of wind farm turbines and techno-economic assessment of wind farm design and operation. The research outcome is implemented in software tools and incorporated in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your work will mainly be focused within systems engineering and optimization activities in the SYS section at DTU Wind Energy. Specific tasks will include:

  • Development and adaptation of models for wind turbine and farm physics and costs for the TOPFARM wind farm optimization framework
  • Executing wind farm optimization studies in a range of applications including but not limited to: wind farm layout optimization, design of wind farm collection systems, hybrid plant sizing and physical design, etc.
  • Writing papers for conferences and journal publications, supporting development of research proposals, and participation on commercial projects for improving wind farm optimization practice by industry
  • Overall maintenance, documentation, training and support of the TOPFARM wind farm optimization farmeork and model suite.

In addition, development engineer is also expected to contribute to the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the ongoing projects in SYS with reporting and administration
  • Offer support and assistance in teaching the wind energy courses relating to systems engineering and optimization and developing course materials if required
  • Supervise our wind energy master students relating to wind farm systems engineering and optimization and define the potential projects for the master students

The section for Systems Engineering and Optimization at DTU Wind Energy is looking for a systems engineer with a backround in optimization and applied mathematics and its application in wind energy. The candidate must hold a degree in relevant engineering and/or computer science disciplines. Key skills of interest include:

  • Experience with Python / Julia programming languages and scientific libraries
  • Experience with OpenMDAO and various optimization methods
  • Experience with High Performance Computing including OpenMP/MPI libraries

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). You are employed as an Academic Officer or Senior Officer based on your experience.
