The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
University of Copenhagen
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Data Scientist with extensive experience in data management to support the work of the Phenomics Platform at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR), to start July 1, 2020 or after agreement.
The Center was established in 2010 through a generous, unrestricted grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). The vision of the Center is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms of metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. Read more about us at http://cbmr.ku.dk
In 2018, the Center obtained new strategic funding from NNF including substantial funding to establish and/or develop five enabling biology and technology platforms in support of the new research strategy. The Phenomics Platform is headed by Associate Professor Niels Grarup. Read more about the platform at https://cbmr.ku.dk/platforms/phenomics/
Your tasks will include supporting our scientists, both in new data acquisitions and in the management of the existing data of the Phenomics Platform. You will work closely together with lab technicians, bioinformaticians and researchers at multiple levels. We expect you to expand and integrate our current phenotypic database with other heterogeneous data sources, such as genotyping data and data from the Danish registries. This will include documentation and basic quality control of the data variables. Further to this, you will develop web-based applications enabling users to query the data as well as to retrieve summary statistics. You will also participate in the genotyping workflow together with other employees in the Phenomics Platform. The research of CBMR is rapidly expanding and requires new technologies for data management in which you will have plenty of opportunities to participate in the selection and implementation hereof.
- Master’s degree or higher in computer science, bioinformatics or a similar field
- Solid experience in maintaining and designing relational databases; preferably with MS SQL Server databases
- Experience with user interfaces for data acquisition i.e. MS Access
- Excellent skills with object-oriented programming languages
- Strong collaborative skills; ability to share knowledge and expertise, and support to a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- A strong interest in learning more about the life science area, particularly genetics and genetic disorders
- Desirable criteria:
- Familiarity with research data and/or GDPR
- Supercomputing / parallelization and programming
- Practical experience with R and/or other statistical tools and programming languages
- Development of web applications (e.g. Shiny)
- Insight in the area of health and life science data
Place of employment
