Deadline: 15 Jun 2023

Bioinformatics Software EngineerBuild bioinformatics systems to solve high-impact real-world challenges

Imagine a world in which it is possible to produce most meat synthetically without rearing animals, paralyzed patients can have their spinal cords restored with the help of stem cells, industrial chemicals are produced in factories that use microbes, diseases caused by genetics are prevented before birth, diets and fitness regimens are tailored to individual genomes, microbiomes help extend life expectancy, and bio-machine interfaces enable direct mental control of electronics. The foundational technologies for all of these possibilities are already in place. The world is experiencing a biotechnological revolution that has been decades in the making, and while these are the early days, the scope and scale of these emerging capabilities will have a broad impact on economies and societies.

At The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), located on the Technical University of Denmark’s main campus near Copenhagen (Kongens Lyngby), we develop the next generation of biosustainable technologies using synthetic biology techniques with state-of-the-art equipment and top-class scientists from all over the world. We aim to achieve the goal of a sustainable future by creating novel paths to chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals, and food using microbial cells. We are searching for a software engineer that will contribute to the development of bioinformatics databases and analytics platforms to be leveraged in designing strains for sustainable bio-based production of valuable compounds. Examples of similar projects can be found at imodulondb.org and prochipdb.org.

Build microbial strain design tools for large-scale omics analysis and more
You will join the DTU Biosustain’s Reconstruction Team, headed by DTU Biosustain Prof. Bernhard Palsson and Patrick Phaneuf. You will work closely with skilled scientists and subject matter experts to help them translate needs into possible software solutions. As such, you will get a unique opportunity to work with frontend and backend development as well as deployment and application monitoring.

As a bioinformatics software developer, your primary tasks will include:

  • Data processing through cloud-computing services and custom pipelines,
  • Database design,
  • Data analytics development for bioinformatics analysis,
  • Web frontend and backend development,
  • Server administration and monitoring,

At the DTU Biosustain, cross-organizational collaboration and knowledge sharing are the foundation for turning our highly ambitious goals into reality. As such, you can look forward to working closely together with experimentalists, computationalists, and other engineers to ensure the success of your projects.
