Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented bioinformatician to commence June 1, 2020 at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen.

Our research
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that will transform our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010, and in 2017 we moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower .

The Center has around 200 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: .

Your job
In the Pers Group, we study cellular heterogeneity underlying human obesity and type 2 diabetes. Our goal is to understand how the brain regulates body weight and blood glucose levels and in particular, to identify specific genes, biological pathways and cell types regulating metabolic homeostasis. To address this goal, we leverage combinations of single-cell transcriptomics and chromatin accessibility assays, in vivo mouse studies, large-scale human genetics datasets and computational data integration techniques. Our team is interdisciplinary (molecular biologists, mathematicians, computational biologists and neurobiologists), international (five nationalities), gender-balanced and maintains strong international alliances with leading international research groups in the field of metabolism research. For more information and links to recent publications please visit .

Your primary work tasks will be:

  • To develop and maintain computational workflows for easy processing and examination of single-cell transcriptomics data.
  • To employ computational analytical single-cell methodologies on primary data generated in the Pers Group.
  • To train graduate students and postdocs in using computational single-cell and genetics tools/workflows.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic staff scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • A Master’s of Science degree in bioinformatics, computer science, systems biology, biotechnology or the like
  • Solid programming skills in the scripting languages Python and R
  • Solid experience in analysis of single-cell and single-nuclei RNA sequencing data.
  • Experience in working with data visualization of single-cell RNA sequencing data.
  • Experience in working with finemapping approaches for genome-wide association study data
  • Motivated and hardworking personality with good social skills
  • Motivated to instruct researchers with less advanced programming skills in using the Single-cell Omics platform’s computational workflows
  • Fluent in written and spoken English is an absolute requirement

Place of employment
The place of employment is the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment

Terms of salary and employment
The employment as bioinformatician is a full time and permanent position. Starting date is June 1, 2020. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications.
