The School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of Associate Professor of Tangible Interaction and Product Design based at the Department of Digital Design and Information Studies.

The appointment is full-time and tenured and begins on 1 June 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position

The Department of Digital Design and Information Studies is one of the strongest academic IT environments in Europe, and we attract visiting scholars and PhD students from all over the world. We focus on information technology as a feature of people’s everyday lives and futures. 

We are looking for an Associate Professor to strengthen and complement existing competences in architecture, industrial design, interaction design, information science and anthropology-inspired design. In particular, we welcome applicants with a strong foothold in product design and its intersections with interaction design as found in, for example, tangible and embodied interaction, shape-changing interfaces, interactive environments and related research areas. The preferred applicant works critically and constructively with digital technology and social innovation, considering both the object of design and the impact of design, and should be able to document strong competences, research advancements and visions for several of the following areas:

  • design, drawing and sketching
  • tangible interaction
  • hybrid physical and digital products
  • human and more-than-human design concerns
  • constructive design research

In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department nationally and internationally and contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange. 

Research

The Department of Digital Design and Information Studies emphasises the significance of high-quality research and attaches great importance to interdisciplinary collaboration. Accordingly, we are looking for applicants with an international profile and track record in tangible interaction and product design with the capacity to bridge the research to other disciplines. 

The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in developing research in the field of tangible interaction and product design, to publish original peer-reviewed research internationally and make scholarly contributions to developments within the field. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the field of tangible interaction and product design and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners and in connection with external research funding.
