Associate Professor in medieval history

The Department of History at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a tenured position in medieval history beginning on February 1, 2023 or soon thereafter. A scholarly focus on the Nordic and European high middle ages (1100-1350/1450 AD) as well as experience with digital humanities is considered a strength. Teaching responsibilities include courses in history and related programs within the department and the ability to cover the 1000 years history of the middle ages in its entirety.

In addition to holding a relevant Ph.D. degree within the field, applicants must document additional research and teaching equivalent to what can be obtained within an Assistant Professorship. In the assessment of research qualifications, emphasis will be placed on quality of publications, number of publications relative to Ph.D. age as well as research plans. The Department expects an Associate Professor to contribute actively to academic development and research in several areas, e.g. programs, centers, and networks. This includes the desire and ability to contribute positively to interdisciplinary settings and larger research projects (Danish and international). Additionally, it is expected that an Associate Professor contributes to or initiates new research streams along with applications for external funding.

To maintain the current dynamic and well-functioning environment in the department, academic ‘good citizenship’ and contributions to a good work culture will be highly valued.

Associate Professor tasks include both research and teaching at the BA- and MA-level within history. An Associate Professor is expected to make an independent contribution to developing teaching within the program and field more generally. Applicants should document experience with independent planning and execution of teaching and supervision at the university level (see teaching portfolio).

Applicants are expected to have collaborative competencies and contribute to solving administrative tasks through committee work. In addition, applicants are expected to collaborate with colleagues to develop research and teaching across subject areas.

In his/her/their research plan, the applicant should present project ideas along with plans to contribute to the department and engage in research dissemination etc. as it relates to the department and university’s overall strategy. In the teaching portfolio the applications should also introduce his/her/their ideas for further developing the program.

International applicants are expected to acquire necessary competences in Danish.

Application, salary and conditions of employment, etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).

If the successful applicant has not documented teaching experience corresponding to assistant professor level, the applicant will be employed on trial for the first 18 months.

Applicants for an associate professorship at the Faculty of Humanities are requested to submit a teaching portfolio with the application as documentation for teaching experience as well as supervision qualifications. Please read more here . 

Application and all appendices must be in Danish, English or one of the Scandinavian languages. Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.  We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.

Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications.  

The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. Please note that only a shortlisted applicant will receive an assessment.
